Harry's Reasons
Spy vs. Spy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gargoyles are watching,
Watching and waiting
He′s hearing voices,
He isn't frightened

Sour lemon,
Is emanating
You better watch it,
It′s going to get you
I see the needle
In a Hundred Haystacks
I see the Haystacks waiting.

|Why don't you change?
|How long will this
|game play out

He's met his match
Journey to jail
What really matters
Better off in hell

His brains in tatters,
Of his own choosing.
Careers in ruins,
It doesn′t matter

If you don′t fight it,
You are a loser
I see the needle
In a Hundred Haystacks
I see the Haystacks waiting.

|Why don't you change?
|How long will this
|game play out

Gargoyles are watching,
Watching and waiting
He′s hearing voices,
He isn't frightened

Sour lemon,
Is emanating

You′re hard headed, so cold blooded
One is too many, three's not enough
Why don′t you change?

In a Hundred Haystacks
I see the Haystacks waiting...

Overall Meaning

The song "Harry's Reasons" by Spy vs. Spy is an interesting piece that talks about a person, Harry, who is struggling with addiction and mental instability. The song opens with the image of gargoyles watching and waiting, signifying the sense of constant anxiety and paranoia that Harry is experiencing. Despite hearing voices, he isn't frightened, which could mean he has become accustomed to these hallucinations. The line "sour lemon is emanating" could be referring to the unpleasant taste left in one's mouth after using drugs, further reinforcing Harry's addiction.

The chorus "Why don't you change? How long will this game play out?" is a plea for Harry to break free from his addiction and start changing his life. However, Harry seems to have given up on himself, and his career and brain are in tatters, and he is now on a journey to jail. The song concludes with the lines "you're hard-headed, so cold-blooded, one is too many, three's not enough, why don't you change?" which serves as a reminder that Harry's addiction is not only affecting him but those around him.
