German Test Drive
Spymob Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When Autumn Rains come and the ground rarely feels completely dry
And I'm test driving cars on mountain roads
Take the curve slow, check my digital watch, gotta keep track of the time
'Cause I've got plans to take my lady out, tonight

Fasten seatbelts Fold around
Defrost windows right away
Running my hand over the passenger seat, fingertips tracing the seams
And I feel like I'm strapped into a cockpit
Grip the wheel tight, my speed is up and a light shower starts coming down
And water's bringing oils up, up to the surface of the road

Fasten seatbelts Fold around
Defrost windows right away
Fasten seatbelts Fold around
Defrost windows right away

Only supposed to have the car out for an hour

When Autumn Rains come and the ground rarely feels completely dry
And I'm test driving cars on mountain roads

Fasten seatbelts Fold around
Defrost windows right away

Fasten seatbelts Fold around
Defrost windows right away

Overall Meaning

The song "German Test Drive" by Spymob is a vivid and poetic account of a car test drive. The opening lines of the song set the scene in autumn, when rains are frequent and the ground rarely feels completely dry. Against this backdrop, the singer is test driving cars on mountain roads, seemingly as part of his job. He takes the curves slow, checks his digital watch, and grips the wheel tight. As he speeds up and a light shower starts coming down, he feels like he's strapped into a cockpit. The rain brings oils up to the surface of the road, making for a challenging and potentially dangerous drive.

The song's chorus consists of the repeated instructions to "fasten seatbelts" and "fold around" while also "defrost[ing] windows right away." These instructions capture the tension and urgency of the test drive, suggesting that safety is a top priority. The singer is also conscious of the time and has plans to take his lady out that night, adding a romantic dimension to the song.

Overall, "German Test Drive" is a beautifully crafted ode to the experience of test driving a car, capturing both the technical aspects and the sensory experience of driving. The song is notable for its attention to detail and for the way in which it explores the thrill and risk of driving on challenging mountain roads.

I voted this as one of the early "iTunes Single of the Week" before the program developed into the vehicle it became. I had hoped it would turn a lot of people on to the sheer magic of Spymob. I think that were either 35,000 or 65,000 downloads. I cannot remember. We sold a few tracks but not nearly as much as we would have if it were a year later when iTunes began to take hold.
