With their 1973 debut album Troia they became an overnight sensation, improvising surreal stories over carefully-arranged orchestral pieces. The formula was repeated on their subsequent 13 albums (the most recent of which appeared in 1994), with an increasing amount of profanity in the lyrics and references to famous songs in the music. In the mid-Eighties they even made two cheap B-movies.
Il silenzio
Squallor Lyrics

Sssssssh...
Ssssh...
Silenzio...
The opening lines of Squallor's song Il silenzio immediately establish a sense of stillness and quietness. The repeated sound of "sssh" and "silenzio" create a sense of peacefulness, almost as if the music is trying to lull us into a state of calm. However, the rest of the song tells a different story. Despite the surface level quietness, there's a deeper sense of tension and unease in the lyrics. The song tells the story of a person who is struggling to find peace and meaning in their life. They feel like they're lost in the chaos of the world, unable to find anything that brings them true happiness. The repeated "sssh" and "silenzio" then take on a more ominous tone, almost as if they're trying to shut out the harsh realities of existence.
The lyrics use a number of vivid and evocative images to capture this sense of disorientation and despair. There are references to a "river of forgetfulness," and the lyrics speak of a person who is "falling through the cracks" of life. At times, the lyrics take on a surreal quality, as if the singer is trapped in some sort of strange dream world. The chorus offers a glimmer of hope amidst all this confusion, with the repeated refrain "io cerco la vita" ("I search for life"). Ultimately, the song leaves us with a sense of both the beauty and the violence of existence.
