A young musician could hardly find better training. But musically, St Lucia's heart lay elsewhere, and South Africa was full of other rhythms. "My mom says I used to sing along to Michael Jackson," he says - an ordinary anecdote, until he adds, "when I was an infant." As a young teenager, he started to feel that he'd had his fill of classical, and it felt like an epiphany when he discovered the direct emotionality of pop. Eventually, he left the creative "small pond" of South Africa for England, where he spent three years studying music in Liverpool.
St. Lucia's journey ended - as so many journeys do - in New York City, where he started working on the tracks that would ultimately turn into his self titled debut release on Neon Gold. The atmospheric quality of St. Lucia's electronic pop is powerful, with the musician's global travels and history of secret hideaways effortlessly passed onto the audience through his dreamy, shimmering synths.
Neon Gold will release St Lucia's debut album later this year. Formerly a singles-only label that launched releases Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding, The Naked & Famous and helped launch the careers of countless others.

Paper Heart
St. Lucia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Face the night
Closer to the dance we climb
Arrange yourself
Before the fight
We will always intertwine
And who are you now?
Push the brakes down
On your little paper heart
From now on
We'll take the past
And the future by the hand
A rose in time
A faded line
All these days just pass me by
And who are you now?
When you don't know where to start?
Push the brakes down
On your little paper heart
The lyrics to St. Lucia's song Paper Heart are filled with emotion and mystery. The song starts off with the line, "Close your eyes, face the night." This line sets a dreamy and introspective tone for the rest of the song. The next line, "Closer to the dance we climb," is a metaphor for facing our fears and insecurities as we embark on a journey. The next lines, "Arrange yourself before the fight, we will always intertwine", speak to the idea of feeling prepared for whatever the journey may bring, and the importance of having support from others.
The chorus of the song is where the theme of vulnerability and fear becomes most apparent. "And who are you now? When you don't know where to start? Push the brakes down on your little paper heart." These lyrics speak to the idea of feeling lost or unsure of oneself, and the fear that can come with trying to navigate through life's complexities. Finally, the last verse, "From now on we'll take the past and the future by the hand. A rose in time, a faded line, all these days just pass me by," speaks to the importance of living in the present moment, and cherishing each day as it comes.
