Wow. My church choir is going to be doing this piece under the direction of co Concordia-MN's chapel choir director (our church choir director, one in the same). Hope we can do it the same justice come Sunday!

I almost cried. My best friend is going to this school. We were talking about show choir vs. real choir and she linked this to me. I think I've listened to it at least 10 times now. This is music. This is beautiful.

I sang this with a choir directed by a St. Olaf alumni who studied with the composer, Olaf Christiansen. Wonderful to hear it sung...brings back fond memories.

Absolutely superb. Having only experienced acapella in a small midwest high school, I can only image what it was like to produce a song of this quality. Everyone must have learned or gained out of being a part of this choir: Talent, confidence, time management, taking direction, socialization skills, as well as all the Christian attributes that one is exposed to by singing the subject matter. I profoundly thank you for bringing me a piece and joy with this music. God Bless.

Their singing is ten times as beautiful as the church, and that's one of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen! Wish me luck for getting into St. Olaf myself! By the way, does anyone know which church that is?

16 years didn't really change the sound of this piece all that much, but there is a bit more expression than in my year in the choir, 1990-91, AAs 1st year. He is seeming to use quite a bit more rubato and romanticism in this interpretation. Oh, relating to another comment here, our performances were seldom hokey or out of control as far as I can remember, but tour could be that way at times, LOL!

@A7Note the choir is made up of Sophomores through Seniors and there is a fairly even mix that will fluctuate a little bit every year based on need and how the voices of people trying out will blend with existing members of the choir. So the goal is not to have it be more senior people but is more based on the skill and blend of the students trying out.

@bshampton117 Thanks for mentioning the swaying situation. As a long time follower of the choir, I have noticed way too much of it in some performances. Sure, it's great to be able to feel the music and not be stiff, but when the pendulum swings too far, it can really be very distracting. It takes my attention away from what my ears are hearing! Moderation is in order.

@toycandyfiend On the main menu it should give you the main program and additional tracks. It should be there, do you have the dvd manual and track listing?

@toycandyfiend I have it as well. Check again, you are incorrect. Look on the additional tracks. 10,000% positive. Unless they found an identical church and drug the other choirs back for a separate performance. PBS ALWAYS edits the broadcast versions down. This is a one hour special cut down from a two hour long concert selection.

Nope. Olaf C.Christiansen, son of F. Melius and his successor as director of this choir, is the composer.

I just happened to stumble on to this web site cuz I was betting my wife that if I googled, "Uhm Yah Yah" I would get to the St. Olaf web site. Then I found this jerk, "Nordic Padre." I have been singing choral music* for many directors in many venues and I will be willing to bet the farm they would all kill to be able to produce the sounds these kids from St. Olaf do. *probably many more years than the Nordic guy has been alive.
