Call Me
St. Paul & The Broken Bones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This ain't the hottie
That I thought I knew
This ain't the party
That I thought we'd do

You got your limit, baby
I got mine
6-11, 3-3-6-9
You got to tell me baby
We ain't the lovers
That will tare me down
We ain't the fortune
All over town
You got your limit, baby, I got mine
6-11, 3-3-6-9
You got to call me baby
I need you to pick up that telephone
And dial those numbers hottie

I need you to call me
I need to hear your sweet voice
Let me, let me, let me, let me hear you again
I need, I need, I need, I need, I need you baby
I need, I need, I need, I need, I need you baby
Got to pick up, got to pick up that telephone
Please, please oh baby

You got your limit, baby
I got mine
6-11, 3-3-6-9
Please oh please baby
Pick up that telephone

I need you to pick it up baby
I need you to pick it up now baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of St. Paul & The Broken Bones's song "Call Me" are somewhat ambiguous and can be taken in a number of different ways, but they seem to largely focus on the disappointment and frustration that the singer is feeling over a failed relationship. The opening lines – "This ain't the hottie that I thought I knew / This ain't the party that I thought we'd do" – suggest a sense of disillusionment, as though the singer had thought things were going to be one way, but has now realized that they were wrong.

The numbers listed in the song – "6-11, 3-3-6-9" – are somewhat enigmatic, but they seem to suggest some sort of code or phone number that the singer wants the other person to call. The repetition of "You got your limit, baby, I got mine" also adds to the sense of frustration, as though both parties have reached their breaking point and there's no more room for compromise.

Despite all of this, the central message of the song seems to be one of longing and desperation. The repeated refrain of "I need you baby" is a plea for the other person to call, suggesting that despite everything that's happened, the singer still wants to try and make things work.

+Tom Laving Saw them at Lee's Palace in Toronto. Dive of a place not worthy of their talents. The hint of urine in the atmosphere confirms this -- not that you asked - But

They did kick the living shiat out of the room that night. And stomped on its neck. Repeatedly. Unmercifully.

They are that good. Greatest live performance ever.

See them live, at all costs.

Stop lying on the greats. Good song, but the singer's performance was not good. I'm very curious about who you're comparing them to.

Crazy to think that this was somebody's jam a decade ago when it came out. They probably listened to it countless times. And here I am just finding it today.

I first heard them on Good Morning America and for the first time in ten years my grandfather that is 83 with a tumor on his lung and cancer got up and did a little dance and laughed. And we needed that in our family because my uncle and also my father figure passed last week. So this is for the band now you guys are by now my favorite (band) and do thank you for that moment that I can now have of my grandpa
