It's Midnight
St. Paul The Broken Bones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It came upon the midnight clear
That glorious song of old
From Angels playing near the earth
To touch their harps of gold

Peace on the earth could will two men
From Heaven's all-gracious King
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the Angels sing

And I hear them singing
Sing, I do hear them singing

The first Noel the Angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay

In fields where they lay, they keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep

Overall Meaning

The song "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is a Christmas carol that talks about the joyful message conveyed by the angels to the world on the night of Jesus Christ's birth. The first verse describes the peaceful, holy night when the angels delivered their golden message to the shepherds on the fields, touching their harps of gold. The second verse talks about the message of peace that the angels brought from the King of Heaven to the world, which made the earth still and solemn so that all could hear the angels' song.

The repetitive line, "And I hear them singing," in the refrain signifies the deep impact the message of peace had on the world, and how it still resonates with people to this day. The entire song has a somber and peaceful tone, which reflects the solemnity of the birth of Christ and the message of peace that it brings to the world.

Overall, the song is a beautiful reminder of the miraculous event that took place on the night of Christ's birth and how this event brought peace and hope to the world.

My mama told me
Son, it won't go away
That old heartache
It won't stop the rain

Oh,
Please try,
Please try (Paul)

Oh, and find the Lord
If you can hear Him say
Oh, just sit and pray

I been bad
I been bad
I been bad
I been bad

Oh, please cry now
Oh, let it wash it away
You been lost, child
And I hope you find your way

Oh, I know it hurts,
I know it hurts
I know it hurts
I know it do
But He'll heal all your wounds
If you can hear him say
Oh, just sit and pray

I been bad
I been bad
I been bad
I been bad

(Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh)

I been bad
I can't

Oh, I need him
Oh, I need him
Oh, I need him
I got to have him
I got to feel him,
My Lord

(Heyyyyyy)
(Ohhhhhh)

Oh, I got to have him Lord
I got to feel him Lord

(Youuuuuuuuuuu)

Omg...I had this on repeat once, on my MP3 player...DAMN I can't get enough of his voice-it's so, so Golden!! I always get carried away, when I listen to him sing. It's a very celestial feeling that always comes over me. I eases me, and I always find myself smiling like a fool, and being totally unaware of it. Soul, baby...soul.

Was just turned on to these guys a few days ago and have been watching/listening to them ever since. Can only say, WOW!!! Amazing how a group like this can remain relatively unknown...don't think that will be for too long though. This guy needs to do a duet with Joss Stone...how good would that be?!?!

@JesusIsKing50

This guy is supreme!! I just heard him for the first time yesterday… and immediately brought his album! His in London live in February.. I’m going to watch him ❤️
