Clark joined Sufjan Stevens' touring band in 2006, bringing with her a tour EP entitled Paris Is Burning. It contains three tracks, including a cover version of Jackson Browne's These Days.
Clark released her début album, Marry Me, 10 July 2007 on Beggars Banquet Records. Named after a line from the cult-hit television show Arrested Development, the LP features appearances from drummer Brian Teasley (Man or Astro-man?, The Polyphonic Spree), Mike Garson (David Bowie's longtime pianist), and horn player Louis Schwadron (The Polyphonic Spree).
In 2008 Clark was nominated for three PLUG Independent Music Awards: New Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, and Music Video of the Year, and on 6 March 2008, she won the Female Artist of the Year award.
Her second album for 4AD, entitled Actor, was released on 5 May 2009. It was written entirely by Clark and produced by Clark and John Congleton of The Paper Chase.
The Strange Mercy Songfacts reports that Clark wrote her third album in Seattle. She decamped to the Northwestern city to escape from the information overload she was experiencing at home and recorded Strange Mercy in a studio provided by Death Cab For Cutie drummer Jason McGerr. The album was released by 4AD on September 12, 2011 and peaked at #19 on the Billboard 200, making it her first Top 20 LP.

They'd never know, cause how'd they know?
How would they know?
You live as a reminder, don't forget the world is cold
I can promise you that that's something I always known
But I couldn't stop trying to find you behind the snow
Break off the shackles, I'll show you how to let go
And we could keep them, hidden behind the garden shed
We could keep them, hidden behind the garden shed
Beneath all the dust we've hidden all of our fears
The secrets in this trip I hold out hope for,
We could go, we could go
To a place, where they don't know our face so it ain't no case
And it's safe, plus it ain't so far, you could leave your scars
Sins rolled away, like that Easter stone, that's got a nice tone
There's THC, maybe LSD plus this love is free
It's shovels for all of your hauntings, a spade for all of your fears
They tell you it's greedy to want things, truth is no one really cares
You gotta go out there and find you, the end of existence is near
Maybe though I could come with you, you probably can't tell but I'm lost too
And we could keep em, hidden behind the garden shed
Dead and buried so they'll never know we were scared
We could keep em, hidden behind the garden shed
Beneath all the dust we've hidden all of our fears
It'll be hard to decide
But I'll stand and we could drown beneath the tide
But you could leave it all behind
This ocean made from every tear you cried
The song "Almost" by St. Vincent is a cover of the song "Almost Like Being in Love" from the musical "Brigadoon." In this rendition, St. Vincent's voice is angelic as she sings about the euphoric feeling of being in love. The lyrics "what a day this has been" and "what a rare mood I'm in" set the scene for the character experiencing the feeling of infatuation. The refrain "it's almost like being in love" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the surreal and dreamlike quality of the experience. The singer feels a connection not only to their romantic interest but also to the whole human race. The music of life feels like it's ringing for them, and they feel as if they are falling in love despite having not quite reached that stage yet.
Overall, the song encapsulates the intoxicating feeling of being on the brink of falling in love. It's a tribute to that moment when everything seems possible and feelings of joy and hope abound. St. Vincent's pure vocals and the vintage sound of the song make it a beautiful and soulful reflection on the start of a new romance.
