Clark joined Sufjan Stevens' touring band in 2006, bringing with her a tour EP entitled Paris Is Burning. It contains three tracks, including a cover version of Jackson Browne's These Days.
Clark released her début album, Marry Me, 10 July 2007 on Beggars Banquet Records. Named after a line from the cult-hit television show Arrested Development, the LP features appearances from drummer Brian Teasley (Man or Astro-man?, The Polyphonic Spree), Mike Garson (David Bowie's longtime pianist), and horn player Louis Schwadron (The Polyphonic Spree).
In 2008 Clark was nominated for three PLUG Independent Music Awards: New Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, and Music Video of the Year, and on 6 March 2008, she won the Female Artist of the Year award.
Her second album for 4AD, entitled Actor, was released on 5 May 2009. It was written entirely by Clark and produced by Clark and John Congleton of The Paper Chase.
The Strange Mercy Songfacts reports that Clark wrote her third album in Seattle. She decamped to the Northwestern city to escape from the information overload she was experiencing at home and recorded Strange Mercy in a studio provided by Death Cab For Cutie drummer Jason McGerr. The album was released by 4AD on September 12, 2011 and peaked at #19 on the Billboard 200, making it her first Top 20 LP.

Wish I Had
St. Vincent Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To the East then drop beneath the sun
And as the moon lies low and overhead
We're lost
Burn slow, burning up the back wall
Long roads, where the city meets the sky
Most days, most days stay the sole same
If I had a boat, I would sail to you
Hold you in my arms, ask you to be true
Once I had a dream, it died long before
Now I'm pointed north, hoping for the shore
Down low, down amongst the thorn rows
Weeds grow, through the lilies and the vine
Birds play, try to find their own way
Soft clay, on your feet and under mine
If I had a boat, I would sail to you
Hold you in my arms, ask you to be true
Once I had a dream, it died long before
Now I'm pointed north, hoping for the shore
Splitting at the seams
Heaving at the brace
Sheets all billowing
Breaking of the day
Sea is not my friend
And everyone conspires
Still I choose to swim
Slip beneath the tide
Once I had a dream, once I had a hope
That was yesterday, not so long ago
This is not the end, this is just the world
Such a foolish thing, such an honest girl
If I had a boat, I would sail to you
Hold you in my arms, ask you to be true
Once I had a dream, it died long before
Now I'm pointed north, hoping for the shore
The lyrics to St. Vincent's "Wish I Had" seem to be about a person who longs for someone they love but cannot reach. The imagery is vivid and evocative, with references to a "golden river," "long roads," and "soft clay." The singer talks about dreaming of sailing to this person and holding them in their arms, but ultimately they are "lost" and "hoping for the shore." The themes of loss, longing, and a search for meaning seem to pervade the song.
One interpretation of these lyrics is that they are about the pain of unrequited love. The singer describes a deep desire to be with someone they love, but this person is not reciprocating those feelings. The reference to a dream that "died long before" may indicate that this love was once possible but has since faded away. The image of the singer "pointed north" suggests a directionless search for meaning and purpose, as though they are adrift in the world without this person.
Alternatively, the lyrics could be understood as a commentary on the isolation and disconnection that many people experience in modern society. The singer describes a world where "most days stay the sole same" and "everyone conspires" against her. The reference to swimming "beneath the tide" suggests a feeling of being overwhelmed and lost in the chaos of daily life. The search for a shore may represent a search for a sense of belonging or purpose in a world that can feel unpredictable and overwhelming.
