I'm age 68, and while I love many of the songs from "our era" including this song, I also love recorded songs from every other era, from the 1920s to current, across and within all genres including Classical, Ragtime, Jazz, Blues, Big Band, Rockabilly, RockNRoll, Surf, Latin, R&B, DooWop, Country, Soul, Rock, Hip Hop, show tunes, and even Sousa marches (as a guitarist, I play from them all).

Tis always a matter of "in the eyes of the beholder" (or, in this case, "in the ears").

Amusingly, the parents of us Boomers said THEY had the best music of all time; and our grandparents said that THEY had the best music during their era.

"Musical prejudice" is okay...but to believe "the songs I like are the best songs ever made" is naive if not arrogant, dontcha think?

Nowadays, and especially in Spain, where new musical genders like Latin trap and "Reggaetón" have appeared, this music is highly valuable, while Trap and Reggaetón are music that are not elaborated and with a simple, unworked rhythm base. The problem with singing and playing is not about the chords, it's all abouth RYTHM.
The right hand is what matters.

If you pay attention, John Butler is always fingering a fast and repeated pattern when he's singing, except for a slower riff at some point. Nothing different than what Mark Knopfler is doing. They're both great musicians. Talent? I'd say it's more about practice till perfection.
Also, Mark is left-handed but his right hand is incredible.

My parents were in their teens when they had me, so I was raised on 70s Classic Rock vinyl. My dad cherished his collection, pampered it, lol. I remember laying on the living room floor feeling the vibrations from the speakers. It never ceases to amaze me the emotions that can be triggered by a song. Dad passed 3 months ago at only 67. For years I've been complaining how radio stations keep cutting of the last solo on this track so I never get to hear the best part of this absolutely brilliant track - and now I find out DireStraitsVEVO does the same?!
