Sometimes It Hurts
Stabbing Westward Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Six o'clock in the morning
My head is ready to explode
I can't believe I made it home alive
I don't remember where I went
Or what I was drinking
But I know it's made me sick
An I'm not denying
That I get this way
When I try to get over you
I get this way
When I try to get over you

Sometimes it hurts so much
to lose the one you love
Sometimes it hurts so much
to lose the one you love

I tried so hard to hate you
But it only makes things worse
I only end up hating myself
And as my hatred grows
So do the lies
It's hard to face the truth sometimes
God I feel so useless
God I hate myself
When I try to get over you
God I hate myself
How will I ever get over you?

Sometimes it hurts so much
to lose the one you love
Sometimes it hurts so much
to lose the one you love

And after all this time you'd think I'd understand the way you feel but no
I only think about myself
And it's driving you away
I always knew it would one day

Sometimes it hurts so much
to lose the one you love

Sometimes it hurts so much
to lose the one you love

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Sometimes It Hurts" by Stabbing Westward provide the listener with an immediate sense of internal turmoil. The singer of the song wakes up at six in the morning and cannot recall the events of the night before, except for the fact that he is sick. He is struggling to move on from a lost love and is indulging in alcohol to ease the pain. He is aware of his erratic behavior, but cannot help it. The lyrics "I'm not denying, that I get this way when I try to get over you," is evidence of his awareness.

The chorus "Sometimes it hurts so much to lose the one you love" is powerfully painful because the listener knows the singer is speaking from experience. He has lost someone dear to him, and the pain is unbearable. The singer makes a conscious effort to overcome his heartbreak by trying to hate his ex-partner. However, he realizes how futile his efforts are, and he's only hurting himself more. The hatred builds up, and he finds himself lost in lies. The lines, "God, I feel so useless," highlights the character's self-deprecation.

As the song progresses, the singer realizes how selfish he has been. He has not tried to understand how his actions have affected his partner. The lyrics "And it's driving you away. I always knew it would one day" show how the relationship has come to an end. The pain the character experiences is palpable, and it's a common feeling that many people can relate to.

Overall, "Sometimes It Hurts" is a compelling song about the pain of heartbreak. It gives a voice to those who are struggling with moving on from a lost love. The lyrics are raw and honest, and the production of the song is powerfully emotional.

Discovered them at random. First song that hit home was : save yourself.

Then now I had a love interest but gotta move on cause she was actually getting married soon.

They had the darkest days albums that pretty much encompasses all the feelings I am going through, feeling of falling in love, then letting go/trying to move on and forget. But its hard to forget and move on and you keep getting that feels bro.

Songs in order are :

You complete me, then
Everything I touch, then
Sometimes it hurts, then
Haunting me, then
How can I hold on, and then finally
Save yourself.

All the tracks hits home if you are in a similar situation or in a dark situation.

Love the songs, it just hit home. But I understand why they are underrated cause people try to shy away from such feelings. Me in the other hand dive into it head first 😅

I guess that aligns with the F in INFJ-T personality 😂

Ahhh, to be a teenager again and have every emotion feel as a crisis....

The fact that this doesn’t have a million views at the very least blows my mind. However, it does show that those who did have great taste. Stabbing Westward will always be one of my favorite bands.

And so the question will always be how can I exist without you?

Not by a long shot. Mad Season we’re just pure brilliance. Just as deep and intelligent lyrics as an early bob dylan or Leonard cohen record set to experimental rock/jazz with a splash of punk rock. The Melvins and I could go on all day. Nothing against SW but they’re just simply not that mind blowing or as inspiring as many others. Mid by comparison. Linkin park was the most overrated and insufferable band of the 90s. It was over with completely once they hit. Just pure cringe. Foo fighters were alright until the second album and they’ve been boring as all hell since.
