I Wish I Could Go Travelling Again
Stacey Kent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want a waiter to give us a reprimand
In a language neither of us understand
While we argue about the customs of the land
I wish i could go travelling again

(I want to) sit in traffic anxious about our plane
While your blasé comments drive me half insane
I want to dash for shelter with you through the tropical rain
I wish i could go travelling again
(I want to) be awakened by a faulty fire alarm
In an overpriced hotel devoid of charm
Then fall asleep again back in your arms
I wish i could go travelling again

But how can i ever go travelling again
When i know i'll just keep remembering again
When i know i'll just gathering again
Reminders to break my heart ?

I wish could go travelling again
It feels like this summer will never end
And i've had such good offers from several of my friends
I wish i could go travelling again

I wish i could go travelling again
It feels like this summer will never end
And i've had such good offers from several of my friends
I wish i could go travelling again

(I want to) sit in my shades, sipping my latte
Beneath the awning of a famous cafe

Jet-lagged and with our luggage gone astray
I wish i could go travelling again

Overall Meaning

The song is a longing for the experience of travelling with a loved one, with all its ups and downs. The lyrics detail specific desires and memories associated with travelling, from arguing over cultural customs to escaping a tropical rainstorm together. The singer expresses a yearning to relive these moments, despite the potential for inconvenience or discomfort. However, as the song progresses, the singer acknowledges the pain that comes with remembering past travels, a feeling compounded by the pandemic which has disrupted the possibility of travelling again.

The song captures the essence of the wanderlust that has been felt by many during the pandemic, as travel restrictions have prevented people from indulging in their love for exploring the world. More than this, the song captures the idea of shared experience, of wanting to travel with a loved one and to create memories together. It is about the small, everyday moments rather than grand experiences, and the desire for these moments to be repeated.

Lovely Stacey Kent - she's so lovely. I remember hearing her discuss how she met her husband, Jim; just before they started dating she used to wait for him at the bus stop on Hackney Road when they lived in London. She used to wait with a racing heart because she had such a crush on him! Well, I used to get that number 55 bus too! It's such a small world. Bless you Stacey and Jim. x
