Polka Dots & Moonbeams
Stacey Kent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A country dance was being held in a garden?
I felt a bump and then an "Oh, beg your pardon"
"Suddenly I saw polka dots and moonbeams"
Wrapped around a pug-nosed dream
The music started and was I a perplexed one
I held my breath and said
"May I have the next one"
In my frightened arms, polka dots and moonbeams
"Wrapped around a pug-nosed dream"
There were questions in the eyes of other dancers?
As we floated over the floor?
There were questions but my heart knew all the answers
And perhaps a few things more

Now in a cottage full of lilacs and laughter
I learned the meaning of the words "ever after"
And I'll only see polka dots and moonbeams
When I kiss my pug-nosed dream

There were questions in the eyes of other dancers
As we floated over the floor
There were questions but my heart knew all the answers
And perhaps a few things more
Now in a cottage full of lilacs and laughter
I learned the meaning of the words "ever after"

And I'll only see polka dots and moonbeams
When I kiss my dream

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Stacey Kent's song "Polka Dots & Moonbeams" tell the story of a chance encounter at a country dance in a garden. The singer bumps into someone and apologizes, and then sees "polka dots and moonbeams wrapped around a pug-nosed dream." Despite feeling perplexed, the singer asks for the next dance and holds the pug-nosed dream in their arms. As they dance, other dancers question their pairing, but the singer's heart knows the answers. Eventually, the two find themselves in a cottage filled with lilacs and laughter, and the singer realizes the meaning of "ever after." Now, every time they kiss their dream, the singer only sees polka dots and moonbeams.

Wow. Best vocal interpretation I've heard yet.

@dept2

A real good version! She has such a good sense of time and interprets the song the way it should be. She has a good "jazz" and "pop" feel. And (I'm sure you heard this before) she sounds a lot like Joanie Sommers who did lots of recording 1961-70.
