It's too darn hot
I'd like to sup with my baby tonight
And play the pup with my baby tonight
I'd like to sup with my baby tonight
And play the pup with my baby tonight
But I ain't up to my baby tonight
It's too darn hot
It's too darn hot
I'd like to stop for my baby tonight
And blow my top with my baby tonight
I'd like to stop with my baby tonight
And blow my top with my baby tonight
But I'd be a flop with my baby tonight
Cause it's too darn hot,
It's too darn hot
It's too darn hot
I'd like to fool with my baby tonight
Break every rule with my baby tonight
I'd like to fool with my baby tonight
Break every rule with my baby tonight
But pillow you'll be my baby tonight
Cause it's too darn hot
It's too darn hot
According to the Kinsey report
Ev'ry average man you know
Much prefers to play his favorite sport
When the temperature is low
But when the thermometer goes way up
And the weather is sizzling hot
Mister Adam for his madam is not
Cause it's too too
It's too darn hot, it's too darn hot
It's too too too too darn hot
I'd like to call on my baby tonight
And give my all to my baby tonight
I'd like to call on my baby tonight
And give my all to my baby tonight
But I can't play ball with my baby tonight
Cause it's too darn hot
It's too darn hot
I'd like to meet with my baby tonight
Get off my feet with my baby tonight
I'd like to meet with my baby tonight
Get off my feet with my baby tonight
But no repeat with my baby tonight
Cause it's too darn hot
It's too darn hot
I'd like to coo with my baby tonight
And pitch some woo with my baby tonight
I'd like to coo with my baby tonight
And pitch some woo with my baby tonight
But sister you fight my baby tonight
Cause it's too darn hot
It's too darn hot
According to the Kinsey report
Ev'ry average man you know
Much prefers to play his favorite sport
When the temperature is low
But when the thermometer goes way up
And the weather is sizzling hot
Mister GOB for his squab,
A marine for his queen
A G.I. for his cutie-pie is not
Cause it's too too too darn hot
It's too darn hot
It's too darn hot
Stacey Kent’s song “Too Darn Hot” is a classic and playfully suggestive tune about the heat being too much to handle during the summer months. The lyrics suggest the singer’s desires to spend time with her lover but is unable to do so because the heat is too unbearable. She states that she would like to sup or have dinner with her baby, stop or dance with him, fool or do something fun, call or visit him, meet or go out with him, and coo or talk lovingly with him. However, every time she mentions a desire, she follows it up by saying it’s too darn hot for her to be able to fulfill it, showing how the heat keeps getting in the way.
The lyrics also reference the Kinsey Report, a controversial and groundbreaking study of sexual behavior and attitudes conducted in the late 1940s and early 1950s, which describes how the average man prefers to play sports when the temperature is low. The song implies that when the mercury rises, sexual activity decreases, which is why Mr. Adam is not interested in Madame, Gob is not interested in squab, a marine is not interested in his queen, and a GI is not interested in his cutie-pie. The song ends with the repeated refrain that it’s “too darn hot.”
In summary, “Too Darn Hot” is a cleverly written and upbeat song about how the heat can affect one’s mood, desires and activities, both romantically and otherwise. The lyrics are a humorous commentary on the challenges people face in coping with the temperature during hot weather.
