Say What You Want
Stacy Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When following your heart
From the start
Oh it's hard
I can't do this on my own

I need you to believe
In me
And these dreams
Everything is boring but change
Everything will change

Why don't you say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening
Say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening

So you're a romantic
You gotta fight for a cause
Music is my passion
Its my own natural love
And those words you wrote
Oh they cut me like a knife
If you would have chose differently
I would not be in your life

Why don't you say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening
Say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening

Blame it on bad timing
It's all my fault
Blame the situation
I am always wrong

Blame it on the weather
If we can't be together
Nothing lasts forever
Nothing lasts

Why don't you say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening
Say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening

Why don't you say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening
Say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening

Why don't you say what you want to me
Go ahead
I am not listening
Say what you want to me

Go ahead
I am not listening

Overall Meaning

In "Say What You Want," Stacy Clark sings about the difficulty of pursuing one's passion and the need for support from those around you. The song features a contemplative melody and a slow tempo to reflect the introspective nature of its lyrics.

The opening lines of the song set the tone for its message, as Clark expresses the struggle of following one's heart from the start, acknowledging that it's hard to do it alone. She then implores someone to believe in her and her dreams, suggesting that this support is crucial to her success. The chorus repeats the line "Say what you want to me, go ahead, I am not listening," suggesting that she is focused on her own goals and is not concerned with the criticisms or doubts of others.

Clark then shifts her focus to a romantic relationship, suggesting that her love of music creates a conflict with her partner's needs. She expresses vulnerability as the partner's words "cut me like a knife" and suggests that a different choice could have changed the outcome of their relationship. The verses conclude with Clark acknowledging that blame for the situation could be placed on various factors, including timing, the weather, and herself.

Overall, "Say What You Want" is a contemplative song that addresses the challenges of pursuing a passion and the importance of support from those around you. Its slow tempo and introspective lyrics highlight the vulnerability of the songwriter and her willingness to confront her own shortcomings.
