Outside
Staind/Fred Durst Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Can bring me to my knees
Again
All the times
That I could beg you please
In vain
That I felt insecure
For you
And I leave
My burdens at the door
But I'm on the outside
I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you
All the times
That I felt like this won't end
It's for you
And I taste
What I could never have
It was from you
All those times
That I cry my intentions
Full of pride
But I waste
More time than anyone
But I'm on the outside
I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you
All the times
That I've cried
All that's wasted
It's all inside
And I feel all this pain
Stuffed it down
It's back again
And I lie
Here in bed
All alone
I can't mend
But I feel
Tomorrow will be okay
But I'm on the outside
I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you
The song "Outside" by Staind featuring Fred Durst is about feeling rejected and insecure in a relationship. The lyrics give a raw and honest depiction of a person who has been denied by their love interest to the point where they feel inferior and ugly. "And you can bring me to my knees again" implies that the singer has been hurt before and is willing to tolerate the same pain. The line "all the times that I could beg you please, in vain" shows that the singer has repeatedly tried to convince the other person but to no avail.
The chorus "But I'm on the outside, I'm looking in, I can see through you, see your true colors' cause inside you're ugly, you're ugly like me, I can see through you, see to the real you" reinforces the point that the singer has realized the fakeness of the other individual and can see beyond their illusions of beauty. The final lines of the song portray a sense of hope, suggesting that the singer believes that tomorrow will be better.

Coming up on 30 years since the pasting of my younger sister, I find myself an old man sitting down at my kitchen table sipping on some Jamison, listening to Stained and crying a few tears for my baby sister, the pain is still raw, it cuts to the soul, I live for you!!!!!
