King of All Excuses
Staind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You I trusted your intentions a trust you took
Advantage of
Now you, are sitting in the hole that you dug
Around yourself

[Chorus]
You've lied so much you thinks it's true
Do you know what the truth is?
How does someone get to be like you
The king of all excuses

Is she your partner in deception or caught inside the web you've spun?
Did you forget that you were family, the damage you have done

[Chorus]

I trusted you
I trusted in you

This time your gonna get it
All the things you've done coming back to you
This time your gona feel it
Your conscience slowly suffocating you
In time you will regret it
Say goodbye to all the things
You've gotten used to
Life will find a way
To bring this karma to you
To bring this karma to you

[Chorus]

Everything must come full circle
It kills me that I feel this hurtful

I wonder what your children think of you
The king of all excuses

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Staind's song King of All Excuses speak to the feelings of betrayal and hurt caused by the actions of someone who was trusted. The first verse implies that the singer had placed trust in someone who took advantage of them for their own gain. The tone is accusatory as the person who betrayed the singer is now “sitting in the hole that (they) dug around (themselves).” The chorus continues the theme of deceit with the line “You've lied so much, you think it’s true,” while the rest of the chorus questions how someone like the person being addressed could have taken so many liberties and made so many excuses to justify their actions.

In the second verse, the singer asks if there was an accomplice, to whom the betrayer has sold the lie, or if the accomplice was caught in the web of lies spun by the liar. The chorus responds to this questioning, and the following verse is more strongly accusatory towards the betrayer. The singer says that the betraying party forgot that they were family and the damage they have done; thus, the tone of the entire song seems to be expressing hurt and anger, as well as a strong message about how actions have consequences. The thought that karma will find its way back to the betrayer, especially in the chorus' final lines, is a good moral reminder of how all our deeds carry consequences.
