Charlie Byrd's brother Joe (early in his career he was known as Gene) passed today from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was 78. His Rhythm Guitar is on this track. Rest in peace Joe.

Getz and Jobim took the edge off of my early teens.

@Jeremy Frank They're having the same effect on me and I'm in my early sixties.

They are currently taking the edge off my early twenties

My friend posted this song on facebook. I was in a bad/crappy mood. I listened. Halfway through the song I caught myself smiling and grinning. I stopped everything else I was doing to just listen. This is the power of great music on the human soul.

Charlie Byrd was from the Washington, DC area. There was a fabulous jazz club in Georgetown called The Cellar Door in an alley just off of M Street. A tiny venue with a tiny stage, I was privileged to see Byrd perform there on several occasions. A master artist, he was a magnificent performer and his music always flawless and amazingly entertaining. Some of my favorite memories.

Mike Murphy I was into bluegrass way before I discovered bossa nova. Another great group from DC was the Seldom Scene. They performed at the Cellar Door as well. I got to meet these guys at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco back in the late 70s. Mandolinist John Duffy was a crackup. Cussed and drank like a sailor. My kind of guy. RIP. Check out their performance at said venue. Cheers! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGpRfZ99BNqNcbMxFdLlsCziW2jaBCE45
