Para Machuchar Meu Coração
Stan Getz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

'Tá fazendo um ano e meio, amor
Que o nosso lar desmoronou
Meu sabiá, meu violão
E uma cruel desilusão
Foi tudo que ficou
Ficou
Pra machucar meu coração
'Tá fazendo um ano e meio, amor
Que o nosso lar desmoronou
Meu sabiá, meu violão
E uma cruel desilusão
Foi tudo que ficou
Ficou
Pra machucar meu coração

Quem sabe, não foi bem melhor assim
Melhor pra você e melhor pra mim

A vida é uma escola que a gente precisa aprender
A ciência de viver pra não sofrer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Para Machuchar Meu Coração express the pain of losing a loved one and a home. The singer has been living in a situation of heartbreak for a year and a half and he only has his guitar and memories left. The lines "Meu sabiá, meu violão" refers to a type of Brazilian thrush bird known for its beautiful song and to the guitar the singer has been playing for consolation. The songwriters are clever in creating a connection between nature and music to convey sadness and melancholy. The feeling of loss is palpable throughout the song.

The lyrics also hint at the idea of letting go and accepting that the breakup might have been for the best. The line “Quem sabe, não foi bem melhor assim” means “Who knows, maybe it was better this way” and shows a willingness to move on and find a new path. The songwriters suggest that life is a school that one needs to understand to avoid suffering. Para Machuchar Meu Coração is a reflection on the challenges of love and loss, the power of music as therapy in dark moments, and the human need to find meaning in pain.

Translation:
To hurt my heart

It's been a year and a half, love
That our home collapsed
My bird, my guitar
And a cruel disillusionment
It was all that stayed
Stayed,
To hurt my heart (2x)

Who knows, if it was much better this way
Better for you and better for me
Life is a school where people need to learn
The science of living to not suffer

This by far is the most beautifully executed piece of music ever created by the Getz and Gilberto in my opinion.

Idem... It's true

I agree. While other songs on the album are beautiful, and far more well-known, (Ipanema, Corcovado, Desafinado) this is achingly sublime. It is tender and heartfelt, and has a beautifully-crafted series of chord changes. It's a masterpiece of a love song.

Soy cubano. Músico y viejo. Este tema en mi humilde opinión es PERFECTO. El solo de Stan el más hermoso que he escuchado en mis 67 añitos. Gracias Brasil!

Perfecto, hermoso

I remember buying this album when I was still in my teens. The sounds have always been an incredible draw -- and the language, Portuguese is THE language of song in my opinion. It slides, bends with a grace that's makes the heart dance. Perfection. And, let me add my sorrow regarding the passing of João Gilberto. An amazing musician.
