Garota De Ipanema
Stan Getz & João Gilberto w/Antonio Carlos Jobim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Olha que coisa mais linda
Mais cheia de graça
É ela, menina
Que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço
A caminho do mar

Moça do corpo dourado

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes ah

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes goes ooh

(Ooh) But I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her
Yes I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me

Tall, (and) tan, (and) young, (and) lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking

And when she passes, I smile but she doesn't see (doesn't see)
(She just doesn't see, she never sees me)

Overall Meaning

These lyrics come from the Brazilian classic song "Garota de Ipanema," which translates to "The Girl from Ipanema." The song was written in 1962 by Brazilian composers Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, with English lyrics added later by Norman Gimbel. The song is a tribute to a beautiful girl from the neighborhood of Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The song describes the girl's beauty, her graceful walk, and the way she captures the attention of everyone she passes. Stan Getz and João Gilberto's rendition of the song became a huge hit and introduced bossa nova to the world in the 1960s.

The first verse describes the beauty and grace of the girl as she walks to the sea, her body shining in the sun. The second verse talks about the singer's feelings of loneliness and sadness, as he watches her pass by every day. He wishes she knew how much her beauty impacts the world around her, but she remains unaware of his love for her. The English lyrics are faithful to the Portuguese original, conveying the same sense of longing and admiration.

My 17 year old daughter was just humming this amazingly beautiful tune. I looked at her and asked if she knew the song. She did not. Well, she does now! And we are dancing around our kitchen listening together. What a wonderful bonding moment. Peace and Love be with us all...
