I'd listened to the radio
Waitin' for my favorite songs
Waiting they played I'd sing along
Those were such happy times
And not so long ago
How I wondered where they'd gone
But they're back again
Just like a long lost friend
All the songs I loved so well
(*) every sha-la-la-la
Every wo-wo-wo
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're starting to sing's
So fine
When they get to the part
Where he's breakin' her heart
It can really make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more
Lookin' back on how it was
In years gone by
And the good times that I had
Makes today seem rather sad
So much has changed
It was songs of love that
I would sing to then
And I'd memorize each word
Those old melodies
Still sound so good to me
As they melt the years away
Repeat (*)
All my best memories
Come back clearly to me
Some can even make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more
The lyrics to "Yesterdays" by Stan Kenton and His Orchestra evoke feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality about one's past. The song begins with the singer reminiscing about their younger days when they would listen to the radio and sing along to their favorite songs. The memories of those happy times make them smile, but also make them wonder where those times have gone. However, the singer is comforted by the fact that those songs, which they loved so well, are back again like long lost friends. The refrain of "every sha-la-la-la, every wo-wo-wo still shines, every shing-a-ling-a-ling that they're starting to sing's so fine" further emphasizes the enduring quality of these beloved songs.
The second verse of the song reflects on the passing of time and how the present can seem sad in comparison to the good times of the past. The singer continues to recall the songs of love that they used to sing and how they still sound good to them, even now that many years have passed. The final refrain repeats the sentiment of the first: that the best memories of the past can still bring tears to the eyes and transport one back to "yesterday once more." Overall, the lyrics of "Yesterdays" celebrate the joy and comfort that music can bring in times of nostalgia and longing for the past.
