Baba yetu, yet'uliye
Mbinguni yetu, yetu, amina!
Baba yetu, yet'uliye
Kun jina lako e'litukuzwe.
(X2)
Utupe leo chakula chetu
Makosa yetu, hey!
Kama nasi tunavyowasamehe
Waliotukosea usitutie
Katika majaribu, lakini
Utuokoe, na yule, milelea milele!
CHORUS
Ufalme wako ufike utakalo
Lifanyike duni ani ka ma mbinguni. (Amina)
CHORUS
Utupe leo chakula chetu
Tunachohitaji utusamehe
Makosa yetu, hey!
Kama nasi tunavyowasamehe
Waliotukosea usitutie
Katika majaribu, lakini
Utuokoe, na yule, simama mwehu
Baba yetu, yet'uliye
Jina lako e'litukuzwe.
(X2)
The lyrics of Baba Yetu are a Swahili translation of the Lord's Prayer from the Christian Bible. The song opens with the chorus, which translates to "Our father, who art in heaven, Amen! Our Father, Lead Us, With Your Name Glorified". The repetition of the chorus is a reflection of the repetition in the original English version. The following lines request for forgiveness and ask that they be helped to avoid being led into temptation, asking for eternal protection, and sustenance.
The second stanza conveys an understanding of human fallibility and implores God to forgive them for their sins. The song then asks that God helps them to forgive those who have wronged them and to not let them be led astray by temptation. The final line strongly affirms one's trust in God, asking to be saved from destruction or uncertainty. Overall, Baba Yetu portrays faith and reliance on God and his power over life challenges.
