Sweet Baby
Stanley Clarke George Duke Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The sunday evenings, the fun we use to share
Looking through the memories in my mind
Since I've laughed and cried and thought it over
Now I realize that it's never over only set aside
chorus:
Oh it's you sweet baby
Sweet baby
Only hopin' it's not too late to try again
It's you sweet baby
Ever always been captured by your smile, sweet baby
I will always be right there by your side
Right by your side
2. Lyin' here alone I'm dreamin'
My mind keeps wanderin' why
My thoughts are only you
Wanderin' through the memories in myy mind
How could love so real have gone so empty
I just keep wanderin' why
Well I ever find the love we share
3. Oh it's you sweet baby
Though we've had such a long hard road to climb, sweet baby
Only hopin' it's not too late to try again
It's you, sweet baby
Won't you try and believe in what I say, sweet baby
I will always be right there by your sided, right by your side
(chorus)
The lyrics of Stanley Clarke and George Duke's song "Sweet Baby" speak of a nostalgic longing for the love shared in the past with a significant other. The singer reminisces about the Sundays they spent together, the memories they created and the fun times they shared. Even though they have since drifted apart and the relationship seems to be over, the singer realizes that the love they shared is not truly over, only set aside. The chorus expresses the singer's desperation to reconnect with their loved one and be held in their embrace once again. The singer is captured by the smile of their sweet baby and wants to try and make things work again.
In the second verse, the singer is lying alone and dreaming, and their mind keeps wandering back to the past and focusing solely on their ex-partner. The singer wonders how love so real could have gone so empty and hopes to find again the love they once shared. In the final verse, the singer acknowledges that their relationship has been a long and difficult road, but they are still hopeful that it's not too late to try again. The singer begs their sweet baby to believe in what they say and promises to always be by their side.
Overall, "Sweet Baby" is a song about the power of love and the desire to reunite with a lost love. The song is fueled by nostalgia, hope, and longing, with lyrics that beautifully capture the emotional complexity of relationships.

One of the really underappreciated duos of this generation. Two terrific musicians, one soulful, groovy song.

A classic. Whether you heard it 38 years ago, today, or 38 year in the future, it's a classic. So beautiful.

Impossible to have heard it 38 years ago, the song is only 32 years old.

@@viniciusmagnoni6492 the song was released in 1981. I saw them sing this live in 1982, Philippine International Convention Center, Manila, Philippines. So I stand corrected, 38 years ago when I commented to this in 2019.
