Stairway to Heaven
Stanley Jordan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh ooh and she's buying a stairway to heaven.
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.
And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow,
Don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How ev'rything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all

To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

Overall Meaning

The song "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin has been an all-time classic for decades, having been covered by various artists and analysed by music lovers alike. Stanley Jordan’s jazz guitar instrumental reimaginings of classic songs do an amazing job of preserving the essence of the original while also bringing out hidden melodies and harmonies. Jordan’s version of “Stairway to Heaven” is no exception.

The opening lines of the song are about a woman who believes that material things are the key to happiness, and she's "buying a stairway to heaven." She thinks that everything that glitters is gold, which implies that she is looking for happiness in the wrong place. The song suggests that she is being misled by practical and earthly things, and that the stairway she is buying leads her nowhere.

The rest of the song has some cryptic symbolism regarding the two paths that people can choose in life, the tangible and the intangible. The song seems to suggest that choosing the intangible path will lead to true happiness and enlightenment. The lyrics are metaphorical, and the music is designed to evoke emotions and feelings, making it one of the most popular songs of all time.

Stanley has always been on a level that most cannot comprehend, guitarists are just now beginning to make more popular his style he was doing 40 years ago!!!No one can really even come close to duplicating this master!!

@agumperz

That is so true. There are a handful of great players and they are impressive. But then there is Stanley. He is on a different plane.

@cortezmobley8476

Except Reggie Wooten, he comes very close to duplicating Stanley.

@jonathanmoon86

I remember watching him in late 80's but Eddie was the man at the time

@rastafaaa1073

@ronfleming5488

He is one of the most talented guitarists to ever set his hands to the instrument.

@futurebabel
