Born in Birmingham, Myers went to the prestigious King Edward's High School in Edgbaston as a teenager, a suburb of Birmingham. He is related to the popular musician Andrew Myers from Nettleham Lincolnshire.

He is indisputably best known for Cavatina, an evocative guitar piece that served as the signature theme for Michael Cimino's 1978 film The Deer Hunter, and for which Myers won the Ivor Novello Award. A somewhat different version of this work, performed by John Williams, had appeared in The Walking Stick. And yet another version had lyrics added. Cleo Lane and Iris Williams between them, in separate recordings as `He Was Beautiful` helped to make Cavatina become even more popular. (1970). The piece is far more difficult to play than it looks or sounds. Myers also wrote incidental music for a 1964 serial in the television series Doctor Who.

During the 1980s, Myers worked frequently with director Stephen Frears. His score for Prick Up Your Ears (1987) won him a "Best Artistic Contribution" award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Myers died of cancer in 1993.

Later withness said there was 5 to 6 white flashes,along the Easterly direction of this Wessel. There was a Dark Blue NATO-star farther along,and as it imploded,so did the swirling ruby red glowing cloud.
Then all was Dark. 20.13 the clock was.

I hadn't been back from Vietnam very long when this movie came out. A bunch of us guys went to watch it in the middle of the afternoon at a local theatre. Near the very end, I found found myself sobbing from emotions felt about all my brothers and sisters who never came back. To this day, whenever I hear this, the tears just begin to flow. The pain has never left......

I was in the Mekong Delta and can not even see any film about Vietnam in a theater. I heard this music, from the next room, when my kids had it on TV. I liked the music, and listen to the music, but, to save my sanity, I do not watch any thing about the Vietnam war. So maybe do not ever see any movie in a movie theater, where you cannot get out, for a break. Maybe on the small screen TV, so you are in control, and can stop it. We could not stop the war, but we can stop the movie.

The Deer Hunter affected me more than any motion picture I have ever seen. And this beautiful, incredibly sad theme will live in my heart forever. The evening that I saw the film at the theater , once the ending credits and music stopped and the curtains closed, the entire audience sat in complete silence for several minutes. Unforgettable.

I have one comment to offer, and I expect to be hammered for it, but so be it... You can criticize any War you want to, but don't ever belittle the Veterans who served... They did the job they were asked to do and we owe them a debt of gratitude, if nothing else.. When I've seen a guy with a Veteran's hat in the grocery store or wherever, I try to approach and offer a handshake and a Thank You... I've had reactions from complete surprise to "You're welcome Son"... Thank You Veterans for what you went through, good and bad...

Thankyou for your poignant response. This is one of my favorite movies. Our family is still paying for Vietnam all these years later.. After what the FIL saw and did, he took it out physically and emotionally on his kids (one whom is my now dead husband) plus agent orange caused alot of health problems to be passed down genetically. I agree with you a 100 percent. I see a vet, male or female and I always try to thank them. Our country owes them a heavy debt.

The deer hunter was not a hunter anymore after his tragic experience in Vietnamese War. A cinema masterpiece. Not without controversy at the time by critics who applied too much film school BS and sentiment still hot as the war had only recently ended when the movie was made. So many of them criticized the movie for not making conclusions to the questions it presents as if that is desirable or required from a movie. This is a movie about journey, not destination. The movie asks us to ponder the characters' hearts and lives through this journey and how the mechanisms of man and war affected them. Does it invite us who lived at that time to be introspective and analytical? You bet. The Deer Hunter chooses to not make it easy for us. It forces us to grapple with many things..some tangible, some not so tangible...yet extends to us the challenge and privilege to feel and experience rather than assign conclusions.

Also a masterpiece of cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond. The opening shot in this video should go down as one of the greatest widescreen shots in cinema history.

That was a remarkable review of the film. And you are so spot on that the film forces us to grapple with so many ideas, many we had thought of differently before. Unfortunately, today, most people want a spoon-fed happy ending. That's why we have the never-ending offerings of Rom-Com films. They wrap up nicely and no one has to feel uncomfortable. I can't watch that shit.
I watched this film in my senior year of high school. I had already lived through the turbulent times of the Vietnam war and knew a young man who did not return. I was a young girl and he was my neighbor, the eldest of a large family of girls. He educated me on ALL things Beatles. by the time he was drafted I learned every lyric to every Beatles song there was. He felt it was his contribution to my education. We wrote back and forth while he was there. And then it stopped. There was no big notice. But a long time later we got word that he had been killed in the war. But I already knew.
After I saw The Deer Hunter I thought THIS film should be shown to every person who wants war as a first resort. You know the people. Any little thing that pisses them off about another nation and they want our young men & women (oh not their sons & daughters, you know) to go right out there and kill them all. the THEMS, the "other". It's so shocking, even now, to hear people talk like that. Don't they know the COST of war? The cost is blood. And for those brave people who survived it well, they have their own demons to wrestle.
***For all of you in the comments, who served in this horrific war, I'd like to thank you for your service. I know how some people treated you when you returned and that was disgusting. You served as your country asked. And we are grateful for you.

my dad was a combat veteran from WW2, ex POW. growing up in Pennsylvania I went deer hunting, he never did. I asked him "why not?" He replied, "Johnny I had enough with guns in WW2, after i made it back, I sold all of them." I gave up deer hunting after our 2 year old daughter asked, "why are you going to kill Bambi, daddy?"

Although it received a great deal more exposure being featured in The Deer Hunter, composer Stanley Myers had actually written this peace originally for a tragic British romance/crime film from 1970 called The Walking Stick which had starred Samantha Eggar and David Hemmings. It was featured in that film and he reused the piece for Deer Hunter eight years later.

My father showed me this film in 2008 when I had just started high school. The 60's and the 70's were a wild time for the United States. I'm not sure where we went wrong but we did. You'd be hard pressed to find a film today showcasing something as touching and contemplative as this film. Instead we are actively told what we should believe instead of forced to ask ourselves what we should do. Insane world we live in.

Together with my amazing, wonderful, late wife served in Saigon Nov 1969 thru March '71. We 'travelled' very little but engaged with friends in the US Military. I returned to Hanoi in 1990 and was overwhelmed by the love, care and happiness expressed by the ordinary Vietnamese. All those lives lost and all in the name of politics. So very sad. And this music hits every nerve, just like the sound of a helicopter overhead... RIP to all lost souls. Sleep well...

Very much in sympathy with your emotions, but this was written by British compoer Stanley Myers for a Britsh film, The Walking Stick, starring Samantha Eggar and David Hemmings, who attended our school in Epsom, Surrey, England for a year. It was used in the Deerhunter many years later.

Contrary to common belief, the music was not written for this film, but in 1968, for a 1970 British film (Myers was British) called The Walking Stick starring David Hemmings and Samantha Eggar.

Next to Shyamalan of all people, the director Michael Cimino had a perfect rock solid four-for-four in my opinion:
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Deer Hunter, Heaven's Gate and Year Of The Dragon. Deer Hunter of which is one of my favorite movies and as an aspiring filmmaker who at this time is on the verge of getting his foot in the door, this is one of those films that definitely serves as a big inspiration for me even in terms of picking up a camera and making your own movie yourself.

Ho vissuto osservando il mondo, soffrendo consciamente per ciò che stava accadendo intorno a me e sul pianeta Terra, l' unica cosa che ha salvato la mia vita stritolata dal sistema è stata la bella musica e l' amore vero di poche persone . Obviously this moment in the movie was vey relevant to the theme of the movie, but , on a lower level, I had a similar experience. In Australia, my brother and I were rabbit hunting, which turned into snake hunting. After us killing about three, I was on my own looking for the nasty killers. I came across a black snake sliding on some short grass only metres away, and watched it for a few minutes. I realised that he was just doing --living his life, so I just walked off and never shot another one.
