So they are roughly 23 billion miles away from outpost 4 or 246x the distance between the earth and the sun.(246 astronomical units)
Interstellar space is the place where the sun's constant flow of material and magnetic field stop affecting its surroundings.

@Charles Martel So is travelling faster than light. Most sci-fi stories would be pretty boring if know scientific limits were forced on the stories; e.g: no faster than light, no transporters, etc.. The show does get around you concern by using the plot device of "sub-space" communication, basically a hyperspace for communication channels.

@@pallen49 Great question! It never occurred to me to consider that. I guess the only clue is to compare their respective pilot episodes. Pike had one or two acton scenes in which he was quite good, so did Shatner of course. I think what (Hunter) Pike was lacking was a McCoy and a mature Spock. Nimoy hadn't quite formed Spock in the first pilot, but would he have eventually got there? I think so, Nimoy was dedicated to the character. Scotty was there too. So maybe it comes down to the doctor's role. The chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is undeniable. Would Pike have made Star Trek great with Dr. Boyce (John Hoyt)? Hoyt was a very solid actor, but it's hard for me to imagine anyone other than DeForest Kelly conjuring up that magical chemistry between himself, Kirk and Spock. But then again, maybe it would have been better(?!)... Damn you ponchai allen, that's a tough one! Tell you what, I'll go through the portal from The City on the Edge of Forever, engineer the change, and we'll see how it plays out...

My Pop was a career naval officer. He was retired when TOS came out. I was just a toddler. But I remember this episode as the first I ever watched with him. It was by then in syndication and on well past my bedtime. He loved the show. Especially Mr. Spock. He'd sit me on his lap and say "Now this is how a sailor is.". I ended up in the Army as an officer, and whenever I was confronted with a difficult choice I'd imagine what Pop would do, but I'd ask what Spock would do.

NOW that was real science fiction! Loved that show in my teens, still love it and I'm a 70 yr old. This show was a submarine story set in space. It was brilliant for its time. Its themes about the horror of war.

Oh man the original was awesome. I grew up with Star Trek and the stories were great and it was severely underrated and under appreciated. It was simply ahead of its time. But remember back then sci-fi was just starting to take off and this was the only show of its kind back in the day. This was in the era of mostly Westerns and war dramas so Star Trek was a diamond in the rough and deserves more seasons. But audiences haven't caught on yet.

This was a nice nostalgic callback. TBH the original series was great and was underrated back in the day. It was ahead of its time and frankly should have ran for more seasons. Keep in mind back in 60s television isn't where it's at today and the variety of shows were limited so Star Trek was a diamond in the rough. There was nothing else like it back then.

"Balance of Terror" was the eighth episode to be produced and 14th to air. It remains one of the greatest of the entire franchise, one of its deepest and darkest, and one that embodies so much of what made Star Trek memorable: naval-warfare action wrapped around anti-war politics; a strident message about how friend and foe alike live much the same lives and want much the same thing, that no judgment of a national enemy escapes judgment of oneself; a recognition that, for the show's brand of science fiction, hard science is far less important than plot, character and metaphor. The story begins with a wedding and ends with a funeral; Kirk and his opposite lose crew and rue preemptively the war that may follow, but cannot retreat.

Agreed - and Quality of Mercy was a great tribute to it. Plus it did a good job underscoring why kirk was the right man for the job on that day: despite the orders declaring ship and outposts expendable, despite prohibition against entering the zone, the situation was much like The Vulcan Hello - the correct answer was to ignore orders and normal federation philosophy and come in shooting. Kirk did, Pike didn't.

One of the best TOS episodes. At some point the Enterprise had to be shown as a military ship and this episode did that in spades. Shatner's performance during this is just great, when he tells Uhura to send a message to Star Fleet that they are proceeding into the neutral zone the tension is palpable.

Notice HOW the camera zooms in on the characters personalities and expressions. It’s like watching a SHAKESPEAREAN stage play, ITS BEAUTIFUL! ...And the lighting captures the realism. Unfortunately, this and much more were lost and gone from the newer TV shows and Movies. I heard Gene Roddenberry wasn’t even given creative control by Paramount ( who later bought DESILU studios) this is one reasons why Star Trek is totally different than the original. Check out a fan based production called “ STAR TREK CONTINUES” it’s the closest thing to the original TV show that’s out there. It’s too bad NBC cancelled it in 1969. But at least we have 78 episodes to watch over again!

Wow. Aside from an episode or two on television, I've never really dabbled into the original series of Star Trek, though I do really enjoy the OS films (except the first one). The Next Generation, Voyager and Deep Space 9 were the only ones I truly watched. Now, after seeing this one clip of an apparently great episode, I'm forced to admit that I have a newfound interest to begin TOS.

Just imagining that this could potentially be a telling of a future for us if we ever do make interstellar contact with another intelligent and potentially dangerous species makes this one clip brilliant. It gives me a bit of a chill. I like it.

The Enemy Below set in space. Both men knew they were very likely to start a terrible war and neither could afford to flinch from it. Actually, now that I think about it, the issue was never to prevent a war. The Federation was at war already from the moment of the attacks. The issue was to prevent the war from escalating. Had Kirk not succeeded, these attacks would have been regarded like a Pearl Harbor.

This was stage work of an original order. No other show before it except Bonanza had as alluring a milieu. Whats up there, whats around that corner? It was a comfortable and inviting staging, intimate and warm.

Yes. And this episode shows how well the best of Star Trek worked with and around its budget. Prosthetic ears cost time and money... so the non-speaking Romulans wear helmets that evoke the Ancient-World cultures to match the sword-and-sandal lines for their superiors. The set for the enemy bridge was a one-episode construction on the studio's dime, one that had to be torn down after a few days... so the Romulans stand at their posts, suggesting hardened soldiers manning a weapon with an engine tacked on.

Well I'm not 52 or 59 or 70,,, I am 41 years old but I also remember this series when I was a kid,, yes because PTV ( Pakistan television) retelecast this series in, I think 1984 or 85, there was some more English series or shows which ptv telecast on their channel from 80's to 90s like Air wolf, Michael night rider, manimal, Chips, Mind your language, six million dollar man, and for some I forget the names, but these all shows was my favourite shows to watch with my elder brothers, sisters and other family members,, missing that old good peaceful days and specially my mother and father RIP 😢😢😢
