Lifeguard
Starflyer 59 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've never been there
So when I see that look in your eyes
I'm not a lifeguard, with a towel that dries
Who fixes a life
So when there's nightmares
And the stakes have gotten too high, over reactions
Somebody's gonna know who's paying the price
In my moments of crisis
Could I get some relief
Could I get a new license
Where I've only dreamed

I'm not a pinwheel
Or a light turning on in your mind
I've realized
I'm not the towel that dries
Or fixes a life
So when there's problems
And the stakes have gotten too high

You're out of line
Somebody's gonna know who's paying the price

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Starflyer 59's song Lifeguard seem to express an inability to help a person who is going through a difficult moment in their life. The singer, who has never been to this place that the other person is, can only see the look in the person's eyes and cannot do anything to ease their pain. The comparison to a lifeguard who dries people off and fixes their issues is used ironically here to show that the singer cannot be the one to help. In times of crisis, the singer asks for relief and begs for something that will give them a new perspective where they can only dream.

The last verse of the song continues the ironic tone. The singer acknowledges that they are not a pinwheel or light that can turn on in the person's mind. They are not the towel that can dry a person off, and they cannot fix their life. When a problem arises, the stakes become too high, and the other person is out of line, and someone will pay the price. The singer seems to be aware of their limitations and their inability to solve other people's problems. Still, they can see how high the stakes are and how devastating the consequences can be.
