Hungry Ghost
Starfucker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you are aware of a state which you call 'is,'
Or reality, or life, this implies another state called 'isn't.'
or illusion, or unreality, or nothingness, or death.

There it is, you can't know one without the other.
And so, as to make life poignant,
It's always got to come to an end.
That is exactly, don't you see, what makes it lively.
Liveliness is change, is motion.
And motion is going 'nnnnnnneeeeeaaw!,' like this,
See, they fall out.

You can see you are always at the place where you always are,
Only, it keeps appearing to change.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Starfucker's song "Hungry Ghost" contain a philosophical exploration of the nature of reality and the meaning of life. The lyricist imagines a state of being, which they call "is" or reality or life, and notes that this state implies the existence of its opposite: "isn't," or illusion, unreality, nothingness, or death. The two states exist in a dynamic tension, such that one cannot be known without the other. The fact that life comes to an end is what makes it truly lively and poignant. The lyricist sees motion and change as essential to liveliness, as opposed to stasis or stagnation. The repeated "nnnnnnneeeeeaaw!" mimics the sound of acceleration, which further underscores the idea of motion.

The overall message of the song seems to be that we should embrace change and impermanence as essential aspects of life, rather than resisting them in futile attempts to preserve a static state of being. By acknowledging the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of existence, we can appreciate the intensity and beauty of the present moment.

For everyone saying this song is too short: that's the whole point. It's about how life must always come to an end if it is to have any meaning. Sometimes we'd like life to go on forever, but that would defeat the meaning of life in a plethora of ways.
