diary & herself
Starlet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you're on your own again
Sitting around these city bus-stops
Wondering what he's thinking now
And who you really are
Oh these days are cold and clear
Winter's aiming right at you
Baby, what's on your mind?
Do you wish to grow blind?
But don't tear your days apart
Like simple paper sheets
They're worth the written words of you
We're all concerned about you right now
And we'd all like to know
What you're on about
Never mind what he has done
Time will drive a stake right
Through his heart
Stop running and come home
Where you're not alone
Please forgive us that we didn't see
Well now we've read it all
You left your black book
Open on your bed

Your diary said it all
It spoke for us all

Overall Meaning

In Starlet's song "Diary", she speaks to someone who is going through a difficult time, perhaps a breakup or some other struggle in life. The person is alone, sitting at bus stops in the city, wondering about their own identity and what the other person is thinking. Starlet is concerned for the person and asks what's on their mind. She wonders if they want to block out the world and retreat into themselves, but urges them not to tear their days apart like simple sheets of paper. Instead, Starlet believes that the person's words are worth something and that they should take care of themselves.

As the song progresses, Starlet addresses the person's ex-partner and makes it clear that they have hurt the person. However, Starlet also assures the person that time will heal their wounds and that they are not alone. She urges the person to come home and forgive those who perhaps didn't see what was happening earlier. Finally, Starlet acknowledges that the person has left their black book open on their bed and that their diary speaks for everyone. In other words, Starlet understands that the person has been struggling silently and hopes that they will be able to open up and share their thoughts and emotions with others.
