Direction
Starting Line Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've been breaking sweats in the night-time
I was growing my hair
And I could not care
What they think
Cause my eyes were turned up
I've been singing songs in the night-time
I was banging my head
And I could not care
What they think
I said don't open the door
Even if you hear me screaming
I built a raft and got carried away
In my new direction
And there's where I stay
Cause, you should have known
That this boy wasn't grown
So you can go away
Go away
If you want to leave
If you want to leave
Now get down!
I was catching glimpses of bright lights
And they attracted my steps
'Till I was so scared
Of what could be
Hidden underneath the rocks
So we're never in position
I was singing songs of a lost mind
But I am still with my friends
So I am not scared
Of anything
I said don't open the door
Even if you hear me screaming
I met a boy who got carried away
In my direction
And there's where he stays
Well, you should have known
That this boy wasn't grown
So you can go away
Go away
If you want to leave
And now don't you hide
'Cause you've got a treasure to find
So shed those leaves that you lie underneath (underneath)
And now don't you stray
If you feel that you've lost your way
Share this feeling that came over me (over me)
Break down!
I've been breaking sweats in the night-time
I was growing my hair
And I could not care
What they think
I said
Don't open the door, even if you hear me screaming
I am the boy who got carried away
In my new direction
And there's where I stay
Well, you should have known
That this boy wasn't grown
So you can go away
Go away
If you want to leave
If you want to leave
You should have known
That this boy wasn't grown
So you can go away
Go away
If you want to leave
If you want to leave
The lyrics of Starting Line's song "Direction" express the spirit of rebellion against societal norms and expectations. The singer, in this case, a boy, is breaking out of his shell by doing things his way, even if that means going against the grain. He is not ashamed of his appearance, and even though people might judge him, he does not care what they think. The boy sings and bangs his head in the night-time, not for others but for himself, and the music is the avenue through which he expresses himself freely.
As the song progresses, the boy metaphorically builds a raft and gets carried away in his new direction. This new direction is not shaped by anyone else's expectations, but solely by his desires and passions. He has found his voice and is willing to hold onto that, even if it means people might leave.
Further on, the song portrays the message of encouragement to all those who may feel lost or uncertain. Shedding the leaves beneath, finding one's treasure, and sharing that feeling that overcomes them. The boy expresses his steadfast stance yet again, stating that he is not grown, and people can leave if they want to.
Overall, the lyrics of "Direction" speak to the importance of staying true to oneself and not being afraid to take a different path. It encourages listeners to follow their passions and not be limited by societal norms and expectations.
Line by Line Meaning
I've been breaking sweats in the night-time
I have been working hard during the night
I was growing my hair
I was changing my appearance
And I could not care
I was doing what I wanted without concern for others
What they think
Without worrying about others' opinions
Cause my eyes were turned up
I was raising my gaze above the present reality
Like you tore open the ceiling
Like something powerful had uplifted me
I've been singing songs in the night-time
I have been singing during the night
I was banging my head
I was enjoying my music to the fullest extent
I said don't open the door
I requested not to be disturbed
Even if you hear me screaming
Even if I am making loud sounds
I built a raft and got carried away
I started a new journey
In my new direction
In a new path
And there's where I stay
That's where I remain
Cause, you should have known
Because it was apparent
That this boy wasn't grown
That I was immature
So you can go away
I don't need you here
If you want to leave
If you want to depart
I was catching glimpses of bright lights
I saw some promising opportunities
And they attracted my steps
And I followed them
Till I was so scared
Until it made me afraid
Of what could be
Of the possible outcomes
Hidden underneath the rocks
What was concealed beneath the surface
So we're never in position
So we never fully understand
I was singing songs of a lost mind
I was singing about confusion and disorientation
But I am still with my friends
But I am still close to those I care about
So I am not scared
So I am not frightened
Of anything
Of any negative consequences
I met a boy who got carried away
I encountered someone who was also starting a new journey
Well, you should have known
You should have realized
And now don't you hide
And now don't be afraid
'Cause you've got a treasure to find
Because there's something valuable to discover
So shed those leaves that you lie underneath (underneath)
Overcome the obstacles in your path
And now don't you stray
Stay focused
If you feel that you've lost your way
If you feel lost
Share this feeling that came over me (over me)
Try to understand the same feeling I'm experiencing
You should have known
You should have realized

This album brings up such good memories of me and my dad. He passed away in 2011 when I was 17. I remember shouting the lyrics of Something Left to Give with him in his car so many times. Such special memories I’ll always remember. Thank you for that.

My dad passed away when I was 15. I wish I could have shared more music with my dad. That’s cool that you had that with him and I’m
Sorry for your loss and totally get how you feel. Love that song so much. I did a video for my family using that song with pictures of my sons and rest of my family. ❤

This album was so integral to my understanding of songwriting. The songs were a perfect balance of simplistic yet very musically dense yet. Lyrically and arrangement are literally just some of the most fun and potent I’ve ever experienced as a consumer. This is without a doubt their best album. Super tight and polished but authentic and digestible. If they make another project in this vein I’d gladly take a listen!

It genuinely makes me happy watching Kenny and the guys playing these songs. So much good vibes from days long past.

Brian's "Don't Open The Door Even If You Hear Me Screaming" was hauntingly brilliant.
