Just Sound
State Champs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been some time since things felt right
I know that I missed the call last night
But you know that's the way it goes
I miss your smile, your laugh, your voice
I'd be with you if I had the choice
But we don't have to be alone

It's all we know

Ride tonight with just sound
Up too high to come down
With your face reflected
We'll stay connected
'Til it all comes back around

Ride tonight with just sound (just sound)
Up too high to come down (come down)
With your face reflected
We'll stay connected
'Til it all comes back around (all comes back around)

I set the scene, you set the pace
No matter the time, the vibe or place
There's no rules when we've got love
I feel the distance with no touch
It don't mean shit when you mean so much
You're not here but it's enough

Without your touch
You're still enough

Ride tonight with just sound
Up too high to come down
With your face reflected
We'll stay connected
'Til it all comes back around

Ride tonight with just sound
Up too high to come down
With your face reflected
We'll stay connected
'Til it all comes back around

I've been waiting for a moment to feel this way
And every moment looking forward is worth the wait

Without your touch
You're still enough

Ride tonight with just sound
Up too high to come down
With your face reflected
We'll stay connected
'Til it all comes back around

Ride tonight with just sound
Up too high to come down
With your face reflected
We'll stay connected
'Til it all comes back around

'Til it all comes back around, comes back around
'Til it all comes back around, comes back around

Overall Meaning

In State Champs's song "Just Sound," the singer reminisces about missing his loved one and feeling the distance between them. He longs to be with them and mentions how much he misses their smile, laugh, and voice. However, they have to be apart for now, and he finds comfort in the fact that they can still be connected through music. He suggests riding tonight with just sound, getting lost in the music, and feeling like they're together even though they're physically apart. The lyrics serve as a reminder that even though they're apart, their love is enough to keep them connected.

The line "Up too high to come down" is a reference to being in a trance-like state while listening to music, where you get lost in the sound and don't want to come down. The "face reflected" is likely a reference to listening to music with someone else, seeing their expression as they enjoy the music. The singer finds comfort in the fact that they can still experience this moment together, even if they're not physically in the same place. The song's chorus repeats the idea of riding with just sound, emphasizing the importance of music and how it can bring people together regardless of distance.

Overall, "Just Sound" is a tender and nostalgic song about the power of music to keep people connected. It emphasizes how even when physical distance creates a sense of loneliness, the power of music can ease that feeling and bring people together.

There’s so much to say. I was expecting Champs to go a poppier route on this album. I was not expecting this.

This feels like a cumulation of the best parts of each of their three albums— Derek’s grittiness on TFT, the insane riffs of AWTAB, and the production quality of Living Proof.

This sounds like their most rhythmically technical work to date. If this sounds anything like the full album, I am incredibly stoked.

P.S. can we talk about Evan’s fills?! Dude gets better with every album, I swear.

I love everything about this song.

This song gives vibes that it's a mixture of sounds between all 3 of their albums, especially getting The Finer Things feels. I'm not normally one to automatically think that older is better, but I did appreciate this and this song is another banger from the Champs!! Also love how fun they always try to make their videos, the band and the crew who made this smashed this one too! 😃🔥

The Finer Things is by far my favorite release of theirs and with this having reminiscing sounds of it, it made me happy

@Michael Roffo the bridge for critical, he says "till you come back around" in the same inflection.
