Thermal Noise
Statemachine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the dark I can feel your presence
Just a hint of your face in the data flow
Hear your voice as I run the sequence
Through the amp one thousand watts it goes

Thermal noise

On my screen there's a diagram of you
And the disk where I saved it holds your name

There are those who believe our love's not true
But I still adore you all the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Statemachine's song "Thermal Noise" express the idea of longing for a loved one who is physically absent, but ever-present in the digital world. The opening lines "In the dark I can feel your presence / Just a hint of your face in the data flow" conjure a sense of intimacy and vulnerability in the midst of an increasingly technological world. The reference to "thermal noise" serves as a metaphor for the idea that even amidst the static and chaos of the digital realm, the singer can sense and feel the presence of their loved one.

The chorus reinforces this idea, with the repeated refrain of "thermal noise" serving as a mantra of sorts, a reminder of the tenuous, fragile nature of the connection between the singer and their lover. The final verse introduces a note of doubt, with the line "There are those who believe our love's not true" hinting at a societal or cultural disapproval of the digital relationship. Despite this, the singer declares their continued devotion to their love, underscoring the idea that true connection can transcend physical separation, and that love can take many forms.
