@blue lies matter. Crete was a disaster in the making. The British should have been better equipped, more trained personnel and a true leader.

OPERATION MARKET GARDEN should NEVER have been launched in such a short time and haphazard manner.
The landing zones were too far away from objectives.
You never use a one lane roadway to move wheeled/tracked equipment. If one piece breaks down, you have created a bottleneck. Again, too far from objectives. Plus, they should have known that civilians would be using the same road to get out of town causing more congestion. Also, a majority of military personnel were almost in a lackadaisical care-free attitude thinking they were just up against old men and boys. Some literally stopping for a tea break.
After the failure, Montgomery tried to distance himself from the whole operation. Trying to place blame on others. Montgomery's prints are all over this disaster. He absolutely refused to believe any intelligence from the Dutch underground. Refused to accept air recon photos showing German armor in the area. Refused the suggestion that the operation be delayed, even by a few additional weeks, to obtain further intelligence, reconsider landing zones, etc.
It was just thrown together in one week. Montgomery hoping for more acclaim than Eisenhower.

The movie A BRIDGE TOO FAR has so many holes and "misinformation" and points fingers at the wrong people. Making the colonel/general (played by Sean Connery) look like a hero. Why wasn't the point made he never should have separated himself from his troops and getting himself into that position? The character played by Dirk Bogarde is made to look like the total asshole. The polish are made to look incompetent and unable/unwilling to fight. The American forces crossing by boat only had a few days to train in those boats and had no oars which is true.

My mother was stationed at Bletchley as a teleprinter operator. She had no idea what she was doing until I told her why Bletchley was established in the mid ‘80s. She visited Bletchley again later and found the shed where she worked. Well done mum!

One of the biggest things that comes out of this excellent documentary, is how committed to secrecy the people who worked at Bletchley were.
They never spoke about their incredible contribution to the war effort, afterwards, not at all. Not to family or friends.
One of my cousins worked there, and I only discovered in her eulogy at her funeral....

I watched a TV documentary about that, and it is now common knowledge that Stalin new to truth, but had a nervous breakdown and used the British claim as an excuse, saying 'they are trying to divide us from the Germans, ( None Agression Pact 1940) and do the fighting for them.

It's a shame this informative episode hasn't been remastered so its not so dark and hard to see. After all, these people provided an extremely important service to multiple Allied forces, saving lives and obviously shortening the war.

Alan Turing and his abilities are astounding. I can understand classifying the work done at Bletchly Park but not the amount of time and destruction of information.

But the upside was is that they remastered it to a good quality 480p and the SOUND was also remastered and no so much base.. hopefully one day , someone will remaster all FOUR episodes , as it really is the no1 docu on this subject in my book..

Any other country in the world would regard this series as a national treasure and would preserve and protect it. Most of those who served at Bletchley are now long gone and this may be one of the few original sources to give future generations some sense of what really happened at Bletchley (although it does not by any means tell full story). Let us hope that the film has been digitized and protected for the future.

This is kind of an incomplete history. The machines were called the bomb because that's what the original code breakers who were Polish had called the machine that they had built to crack the code. Alan Turing made huge advances upon what they had made but this just seems to leave them out.

For those here mentioned the quality of this (Dark , bad sound etc etc). The capture is from a VHS copy (no DVD was ever officially released by CH4). a while ago I purchased a "lightly used" legit VHS Copy and despite using several different semi-pro capture vhs machines of good quality , I could only get a copy that was as good as the one we have here. The original tapes that CH4 sold in 1999 were not good quality. It was only broadcast once , so there are no "new Captures". Streaming service Acorn TV had a streaming only version of it (no longer available) , but sadly was severely cut down to only 1 hour 53 mins. But the upside was is that they remastered it to a good quality 480p. Hopefully one day , someone will remaster all FOUR episodes , as it really is the no.1 documentary on this subject in my book..

Without Question, it is of the greatest importance, to the world. It's also Ironic, that the whole business was about ultra secrecy, and it's as though the maker's wanted to continue this, by creating a less than sharp recording. I too bought a VHS copy, as soon as it was issued. But it's not as dark as the YT version. I can only assume this issue, was the reason for no DVD.

The visuals are somewhat inaccurate.
The film editor concentrates on the lovely manor house, while in fact most of the workers there ground away in wooden shacks hastily thrown up by navvies.

Watched this incomparable series first time round, Bought the Book, then the DVD, and played it many times. I wrote to the composer of the music, and he sent me copies of his original score, from his original private machine. THe quality of this recording is poor, but better than nothing obviously. This series used to be on YT. but was wiped. It was as clear as my DVD. pity.

This is an extremely important documentary of little known historic events as Bletchley Parks secrets had been so well hidden from the public since the end of WW2. The four part documentary was shown on Channel 4 23 years ago and to my knowledge, has for some odd reason never been shown since. It is a shame then that this has been uploaded in such low res (480p) ruining what is an excellent documentary. I have visited Bletchley Park many times and it's history is extremely fascinating.

I think part of the equation when it came to Crete was that they were probably going to lose Crete no matter what. Even if they had been more effective against the initial pair shoot drop they didn't have the forces there to hold off the Germans at that point of the war.

It makes it seem as if the system works so well that they got nearly every message. Obviously it didn't work that well. The build-up and the Ardennes went completely undetected. I know that the germ is used a lot of radio silence but they're still would have had to have been some communication directing forces to their starting off points. This is what I call science light but still enjoyable.

I still have copies of the original videos sold by Channel 4 in 1999 and watch them occasionally. There was a paperback issued with the series ( Station X by Michael Smith) which has lots of the information given in the films. I guess one day my VCR will conk out and then not be able to see it for I don't think there is a DVD version.
There is a definitive biog of Alan Turing by Andrew Hodges. It's very long and a bit technical but a great reference. Of almost equal interest for me is the story of RAF Medmenham in WW2. Many brave pilots brought back pictures from photo reconnaissance over Germany and they were analysed there. Among their greatest achievements was their discovery of the site in Germany where the massive V2 rockets were being developed. It's all detailed in a great paperback - Spies in the Sky by Taylor Downing.
Alan Turing died some time on the evening of 7 June 1954. I was born at 810pm on 7 June 1954!

There were MANY secret Manor Houses, hidden away in the country, that were used by the Secret Service, Military, Signals Units, that fed Bletchley with incoming material. It was after all---TOTAL WAR, from day one. As a isolated small island, we were fighting for our very existance. And I, slept peacfully through it all, ( born 1941 ) except the day about 4 Spitfires roard over our house, while I was taking a knapp in the garden. The Castle Bromwich Spitfire Factory was 6 miles away.

The American Navy's reluctance to change the code after they knew the Germans could read it surprises me. During the Vietnam War, I had next to nothing to do with codes, except for a few months when I served in a remote location. During that time we often received coded messages like, "25 B-52 your location 0500 Zulu." An officer would decode the message. They had a code book for each day, and each day two officers burned the code book from the previous day. A procedure rather the opposite of the situation in World War Two.

Something, usually buried, was the US military guy who left vital secret information documents , implicating Bletchley, behind when he left his hotel in the middle East. Nazi sympathisers handed it over to the German Embassy, which was sent to Berlin. They failed to see the importance of it, and it was filed away and lost.

The codes were in a book of codes. Several of these books were recovered. Search U559 boarding. They provided access for a while. The Germans knew that their codes were being intercepted and blamed a leak at high levels, accusing some of their own officers. Refer to the video about the capture of U559 where the Enigma and the code book were saved before it sank. Almost all sailors were saved but isolated.

Again what's your point? The Poles did incredible work early on and yes they created the BombA as a way to decrypt early enigma messages but this became useless once the Germans introduced the plug board. Turing's BombE was capable of working out both the rotor settings AND the plug board wiring

It is very unfortunate that the British had to lose men and ships before they believed the intelligence. But it is worse that later the Americans had to go through the same process, losing even more men and ships before they believed.

@Philip Croft Thanks, I understand that actions taken may have revealed the code had been broken and hard decisions had to be made. I was commenting on the military, (Navy), completely ignoring the intelligence reports until after great losses, e.g. the 1500 British lives lost (35:45). Later, the Americans did not learn from the British, they too initially ignored the intelligence (1:35-1:38) and 397 ships were sunk before it was taken seriously. In the US case, it should not have taken six months for shipping tactics to change.

THe reason for sometimes not reacting on the informaton, is because the risk of the Nazis concluding that we had broken their codes, was too valuable to take, which happened several times during the war. WE would often have spotter planes fly over a potential target first. to give the impression thats how we knew what was happening..

Some of the docu is helpful in explaining the Enigma machine . BUT they make a personality cult of Turing eg the key appeal to Churchill in 10.1941 was much more to do with CHO'D Alexander & Stuart Miner-Barry who actually delivered it. The film implies it was Turing alone who appealed. He was completely impractical unlike Alexander & M-B who set up Huts 8 & 6 on a production line basis with big teams working on each message.

yes we know, but the technology of the 1932 enigma was upgraded by the Germans, at wars beguinning, so without code books, we were still in the dark. BUT, it was still helpful.

It is not correct that the "bombe," the computer made and used at Bletchley was the world's first programmable computer. It was pre-dated at the very least by the the Atanasoff-Berry machine in the US and the Zuse machine in Germany. Both had stored programs, and both were up and running before the start of the war, and thus before this "Station X," Bletchley, even existed.
The work these excellent codebreakers did was both very fine and hugely important as it was, and needs no fictitious gilding the lily. Wrong place for any bodyguard of lies.

They don't actually say that at all. They say that COLLOSSUS was the first programmable digital electronic computer.

ABC was not programmable and early z computers weren't electronic.

Yes in the early years the Poles guessed they were lazy and used ABCD but that practice from the Germans didn't continue for across their forces for long; it was changed constantly. It was only through the brilliance of the people at Station X that they were able to work out the plugboard settings on a daily basis

Human error, the axis never used the enigma machine to its full potential. The documentary stated, they used, " A,B,C,D, " for the first sdttings when any combination would have made it impossible to figure out then if you watch the , Alan Turring (sp.) Documentary, that too explains much the same, so it was human error on the part of the axis that failed not the machine itself...

@Gordon Frickers It was just a Gay fest, Hollywood had obviously never heard of Turing, Bletchly, any of it. They were bowled over after the war, to learn that we had created the first semi Programmeable Computer, in the world , in 1944. America had announced with fanfares blowing,. THEIR 'FIRST COMPUTER IN THE WORLD '. but it was not programmable. I read that it took several hours to unplug and change hundreds of wires and connections, to change a programme. BUT THEY, didn't treat it as a top security device, and looked to the massive profits to come. while we, burned all the info, and destroyed 2 of the 4 Colossus, on Churchills orders. REASON ? because the Russians had found and cracked the enigma ', BUT NOT--know, we had cracked Hitler's superior version, called Lorenze, and were listening to all their enigma messages for years.

Cryptographers made up about 20% of the code breakers at BP. Vast majority were just intelligent folk who came from all walks of life. Good at cross words, puzzles, language. Teachers, house-wives, cabbies, barbers, butchers, whatever. Lots of ladies worked at BP code-breaking. Very few Code-breakers at BP were cryptographers.

@Samuel Elsby ultra information given to freyberg included 25000 paratroopers and 10000 marine landed troops. Instead of admitting they misinterpreted the intelligence, they claim in this documentary that it was more important "not to give away intelligence" than to hold Crete.
Multiple things went wrong for both sides on Crete. General Student lacked adequate initial transport. (British had same issue at Arnhem)
Here again is the "horseshit" I point out. Not only was the Intel given to freyberg false. (grossly misinterpreted)
This shows creator instead of placing blame where it laid. (British were very poorly equiped, trained and led) gives the loss of Crete as a strategic choice vs what it really was. A battle loss.

The Poles did excellent work early on and yes they created the BombA as a way to decrypt early enigma messages but this became useless once the Germans introduced the plug board. Turing's BombE was capable of working out both the rotor settings AND the plug board wiring
