Flowers on the Wall
StatlerBrothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're givin' me is conscience I guess
If I was walkin' in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none
While you 'n' your friends are worried about me I'm havin' lots of fun

Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' captain kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do

Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine
You can always find me here, I'm havin' quite a time

Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' captain kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do

It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete

Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' captain kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do

Don't tell me I've nothin' to do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of StatlerBrothers' song Flowers on the Wall speak of a person who is seemingly content with their solitude while others are expressing concern for their well-being. The person initially acknowledges the concern but brushes it off, saying that they are actually having fun and others need not worry about them. The lyrics then describe how the person spends their time - counting flowers on the wall, playing solitaire, and smoking cigarettes while watching Captain Kangaroo. The person even goes as far as pretending to be on the town, demonstrating their active imagination and ability to entertain themselves. The song concludes with the person bidding farewell and going back to their room, where they feel most comfortable and complete.

I will always have a special place in my heart for The Statler Brothers! My grandma was their secretary all the way up until they retired. I remember sitting in their "meeting" room eating oranges, while Harold made my little brother and I laugh hysterically 🤣 we still keep in touch with Jimmy once in a while. These guys were the kindest men I've ever met. They definitely kick-started my passion for singing. Man so many awesome memories!

@ExMachina70

The bass singer never trying to make that one moment about himself, yet what everyone will always remember.

“Playin’ Solitaire til dawn with a deck of 51.” Man, that was a long night.

"That's how you're gonna beat 'em, Butch. They keep underestimating you."

Thank you
I’m setting here with my 87 year old mother with severe Alzheimer’s. I’m playing her this song she had all these recordings on eight track in her car. I remember as a kid thank you for uploading.

Aww - Bless your heart - thats a hard, hard thing to go through...😢

@tb40ford

@@lanasmiley5643 Thank you she easy to work with smiles and her care facility says she is an angel to take care of. We kept her at home for five years and the UTIs and everything got to much for us to handle. I spend all day and Sunday evenings with her. We always enjoy the Statler Brothers music. I can always get some good reactions from her with Statler music.

A footnote: Flowers on the Wall won the 1966 Grammy award for Best Contemporary (Rock and Roll) Performance by a Group, Vocal or Instrumental. The Statlers won the vote for the award over their competitors, a quartet of mop-haired lads from Liverpool.

@kbanghart

Thank you so much for that tidbit. My dad loved the group, and he would have been 25 in 1966, so it's understandable why he loved them so much.
