Get Out Of Denver
Status Quo Lyrics

( seger )

I still remember, it was autumn and the moon was shining
Our '60 cadillac was rolling through nebraska whining
Doing a hundred-twenty, man the fields was bending over
Hauling up for the mountains knowing we was traveling further
All our fires were blazing and the spinning wheels were turning, turning
Had my girl beside me, brother, brother, she was burning, burning

I walked up back to speak to this southern funky school teacher
She had a lot of something heavy but we couldn't reach her
We told her that we needed something that would get us going
She pulled out all she had and laid it on the counter showing
All I had to do was lay my money down and pick it up
The cop came busting in and then we lit out in a pickup truck

Go! get out of denver, better go, go
Get out of denver, better go
Get out of denver, better go, go
Get out of denver
'cause you look just like a commie and you might just be a member
Better get out of denver, better get out of denver

Well, red lights were flashing and the sirens they were screaming
We had to pinch each other just to see if we were dreaming
Made it to lovely pass in under less than half an hour
Lord, it started drizzling and it turned into a thundershower

Well, red lights were flashing and the sirens they were screaming
We had to pinch each other just to see if we were dreaming
Made it to lovely pass in under less than half an hour
Lord, it started drizzling and it turned into a thundershower

The rain was driving but the caddy kept on burning rubber
We kept on driving 'til we ran into some fog cover
We couldn't see a thing but somehow we just kept on going
We kept on driving all night long and then into the morning
Morning fog had lifted when we looked to see where we was at
We're staring at a colorado state policeman trooper cat

Go! get out of denver, better go, go
Get out of denver, better go
Get out of denver, better go
Get out of denver
'cause you look just like a commie and you might just be a member
Better get out of denver, better get out of denver
Better go! get out of denver, better go
Get out of denver, better go
Get out of denver, better go
Get out of denver
'cause you look just like a commie and you might just be a member
Better get out of denver, better get out of denver
Better go!

Get out of denver, better get out of denver
Better get out of denver, better....go!
Get out of denver , better go, get out of denver
Better get out, get out, get out
Get out of denver
Better go, get out of denver better go get out of denver

Better, better
Get out, get out, get out, get out, get out

Overall Meaning

“Get Out of Denver” by Status Quo is a narrative song that tells a story of a man and his girlfriend traveling from Nebraska to Denver in a 1960 Cadillac. They go to buy some drugs from a school teacher but are interrupted by the police. The couple manages to escape the police and drive through the night in their Cadillac until they make it to Colorado State. Their journey was rife with thrills, soaring speeds, drug use, and breaking the law. The lyrical style is heavily influenced by Bob Seger's storytelling movies highlighting the wild tales of America's highways.

The ruggedness and roughness of the lyrics captures the concept of freedom in the music of the 60s and early 70s. Status Quo painted the picture of the hippie culture in America in the late 60s in this song. The lyrics are a vivid representation of the psychedelic era of American music. The exhilaration of the adventure is captured in lines such as “Doing a hundred-twenty, man the fields were bending over” and “Had my girl beside me, brother, brother, she was burning, burning.”

One interesting fact about the song is that it was not composed by Status Quo. Bob Seger wrote it in 1974 for his album "Seven." A cover of this song by Georgia Satellites in 1986 was placed in the top 5 of the US rock charts. “Get Out of Denver” is considered one of the status quo's best tracks due to its firm riff and catchy chorus. The song was performed at the "Live Aid" fundraising concert for African Famine Relief with more than 200 million viewers worldwide. The original version was an entirely different vocal and instrumental rendition of the song, compared to the cover of Status Quo.

Other interesting facts about “Get Out of Denver” include that it was played during the end credits of the movie “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.” The Cadillac mentioned in the song was apparently of the same model as Elvis Presley's pink Cadillac. The song was accused of being a blatant advertisement for drug use, and as a result, it was banned in some places. The lyrics “'cause you look just like a commie and you might just be a member” suggest suspicion towards young people in the 70s, with the song being written at a time of US engagement in the Cold War.
