On The Road Again
Status Quo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I'm so tired of crying
But I'm out on the road again
I'm on the road again
Well, I'm so tired of crying
But I'm out on the road again
I'm on the road again
I ain't got no woman
Just to call my special friend

You know the first time I traveled
Out in the rain and snow
In the rain and snow
You know the first time I traveled
Out in the rain and snow
In the rain and snow
I didn't have no payroll
Not even no place to go

And my dear mother left me
When I was quite young
When I was quite young
And my dear mother left me
When I was quite young
When I was quite young
She said "Lord, have mercy
On my wicked son"

Take a hint from me, mama
Please don't you cry no more
Don't you cry no more
Take a hint from me, mama
Please don't you cry no more
Don't you cry no more
'Cause it's soon one morning
Down the road I'm going

But I ain't going down
That long old lonesome road
All by myself
But I ain't going down
That long old lonesome road
All by myself

I can't carry you, baby
Gonna carry somebody else

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Status Quo's song "On The Road Again" are about a man who is tired of crying and longing for someone to call his special friend. He decides to hit the road again despite not having a woman by his side. He reminisces about the first time he traveled in the rain and snow with no payroll and nowhere to go. His mother had left him when he was young and had wished for mercy upon her wicked son. The man asks his mother to take a hint from him and not cry anymore. The song ends with the man saying that he can't carry his previous lover, but he will carry someone else.

The song speaks of someone who is going through a difficult time in his life and decides to take a break from it all and hit the road. He has gone through hardship before and has come out of it alive. The song, therefore, speaks about resilience and how someone can survive even the toughest of times. The song also has a sense of camaraderie; the man can't carry his previous lover, but he will carry somebody else, signifying that even though he is alone, he will never be alone on the road.
