Who Am I?
Status Quo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Am I to you a lover or a brother?
Am I the one you can rely upon?
Am I the one you can take home to your mother
And am I the one who is singing you this song?
Who am I? Who am I?
Who am I to you?

Am I the one who lies here in your bed?
Am I the one you made to dry out?
And am I the one who yesterday said
Am I the one you'd be better off without?
Who am I? Who am I?
Who am I to you?

Am I the chain that keeps you from falling?
Am I the thoughts going round in your head?
Am I the night-time? Am I the morning?
Am I a fool that you wish for dead?

Yes I am your lover and your brother
I am the one who lies here in your bed
I am the one who never did you wrong
I am the fool that you wish were dead

Who am I? Who am I?
Who am I to you?

Overall Meaning

These lyrics reflect the confusion and uncertainty in a relationship. The singer is questioning their role in the other person's life and trying to understand where they stand. The first stanza poses a series of questions about their relationship in terms of intimacy and trust - are they a lover or a brother, can they be relied upon, can they meet the approval of the other person's family, and are they the one singing this song. These questions demonstrate the singer's desire to define their place in the relationship and feel secure in it.

The second stanza shows the singer's insecurity and fear of rejection. They question if they are the one the other person wants to be with and if they are adding value to their life. The line "Am I the one you'd be better off without?" really captures the insecurity and fear of abandonment that the singer is feeling.

The final stanza is the singer's attempt to answer their own questions. They declare that they are both the lover and the brother, they are lying in the other person's bed, and they have never done anything wrong. However, they also acknowledge that they may be seen as a fool and that the other person may wish they were dead. This final line shows the anxiety the singer feels about how they are perceived and whether they are truly valued in the relationship.

Such deep lyrics that if you were to ask someone special the answer could either elate you or crush you.
"Who Am I" and "Dirty water" were the standout songs on the album for me.

Umleitung DOTH

Correct, except for dirty water

'Rockin' album was generally not liked as it diverged from the true 'Quo sound'. I agree that it did that, but there are still some great sounds on this album, this being one of them.
