Wild Side Of Life
Status Quo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, you wouldn't read my letters if I wrote you
You asked me not to call you on the phone
Well, there is something I've been waiting for to tell you
So I wrote it in the word of this song

Now, the glamor of the gay nightlife has lured you
To the places where the wine and liquor flow
Well, you went to be somebody else's baby
And forget the truest love you'll ever know

I never knew there where honky-tonk angels
Oh, I might have know you'd never make a wife
Now, you gave up the only one that ever loved you
And went back to that wild side of life

Well, the glamour of the gay night life has lured you
To the places where the wine and liquor flow
Well, you went to be some body else's baby
And forget the truest love you'll ever know

I never knew there where honky-tonk angels
Oh, I might have know you'd never make a wife
You gave up the only one that ever loved you
And went back to that wild side of life

I never knew there were honky-tonk angels
Oh, I might have know you'd never make a wife

Now, you gave up the only one that ever loved you
Oh, and went back to that wild side of life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Status Quo's "Wild Side of Life" song convey a nostalgic message about lost love. The song's protagonist addresses a former lover who has moved on to a life of excess and extravagance in the city, distancing themselves from the singer. The singer tries to reach out to the former lover, but all efforts seem futile since the lover refuses to acknowledge any of the singer's advances. So, the singer pens down everything he wished to tell her in a song, pouring out his wistful emotions through a music track.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the hopelessness of the situation - the lover has left for the "wild side of life," and there's no coming back. The wild side of life is all about the luxurious parties and the indulgent lifestyle, where the wine and liquor flow freely. Despite the singer's love and devotion, the lover has chosen to give that up for the bright lights and adventures of the city. What's most heartbreaking is that the singer believes the lover will never make a good wife and has left the one person that ever loved her.

In essence, "Wild Side of Life" is a cautionary tale wrapped in a country-rock song. The singer warns about the dangers of the temptations of the city and the importance of staying true to love. The song embodies the essence of the country genre by portraying raw emotions of lost love, heartache, and rugged individualism.

Ah, the original Status Quo had ROY LYNES on Keyboards in the 60's and he went AWOL in 1970.
" Down The Dustpipe " would sound very strange without Roy's brilliant piano playing in 1970.
Roy also co-wrote a few great Psych Pop/Rock songs with Alan Lancaster in the late 60's.
Roy from the ' original ' QUO has been living in QLD Australia for many decades.
Roy actually joined the band on stage at one of their Brisbane gigs.
In 1973 Andy Bown made his debut on the HELLO album playing Keyboards and was made an official member in 1982 due to a restrictive clause in a previous contract with another Record Company.
Andy also played in a late 60's band called The Herd with Peter Frampton before Frampton joined Humble Pie with Steve Marriott.
So Gerard, when you say 'original QUO '
you mean The FRANTIC FOUR, even though Bob Young and Andy Bown were 'in' the band.
People call me The Encyclopaedia for a good reason.

This song was a stand alone, non - album track.
It definitely was not on BLUE FOR YOU when released in 1976.
It was added as a Bonus track many decades later.
Other Bonus tracks are YOU LOST THE LOVE and ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT.
Along with MYSTERY SONG ( SINGLE VERSION )
Track 12 is the Disco and Official Single version of Wid Side of Life.
Track 14 is the Straight Rock version described as the DEMO version.
If you are a Drummer you'll know that RAOTW, Accident Prone and the above mentioned WSOL plus a couple of other QUO songs are technically DISCO tunes.
The Kick Drum beat is One, One, One, One, One, One, One, One, One,.........
Most QUO supporters think they are the biggest QUO fans until they meet or encounter me.
There is nothing QUO can't do, whether it's Psych Pop/Rock then Stoner Boogie n Blues Rock then Classic Rock then Disco Rock and the God awful Country Rock ( Margeurita Time ) and recently the Acoustic Studio and Acoustic LIVE albums.
Whatever they do, good or bad, warts n all, I love them with a burning passion.
However, Wild Side of Life was not on the BLUE FOR YOU album.

The Mighty QUO at their peak. This tune is just soooooo much boogie........the rhythm, Francis' vocal - just brilliant.

@aboutthemetal8783

This is the real quo, its impossible to put into words just how good their live shows were, the energy was immense, and they were so much heavier, they never managed to capture the heaviness on record, the furious four, for ever.

@masterofdisaster7427

You are absolute right, i'm 56, seen them 40years ago for the first time and many times after that. Real heavy rock show.
And always a real pleasant vibe in the crowd.
