We used to go to blockbuster on Friday evening and keep videos for the weekend. I remember waiting for people to return a new release so we could rent it.

Blockbuster however made a poor business decision when Netflix extended an offer to them to go digital with them and refused the offer, blockbuster wound up going out of business shortly thereafter.

The old blockbuster location turned into a pawn shop which is still in operation today.

Only place you can rent physical media bow is Redbox kiosks which are on the outside of Walgreens, CVS, Circle K and some grocery stores.

We still have a VHS player and several DVD/bluray players.

We still have over a thousand DVD's/blurays. During Christmas we watch several DVD's which you can't stream unless you buy a particular streaming service.

Streaming has become more expensive than cable TV nowadays so it wouldn't surprise me if we start seeing more physical media being offered. Remember what's old is new again.

This video brings back a sweet memory of my daughter. As a single mom I couldn’t afford a lot of entertainment, and she was about four the first time I remember taking her to a video store. Excited and overwhelmed she said “thank you Mommy for bringing me to the movies!” lol.. I don’t remember telling her that story, she’s 25 now.

I used to love Blockbuster! Our weekend revolves around our choices. I’d pick 2 movies, my wife would pick 1 and our son would pick a couple from the kids section. Few beers, a curry, and crisps/chips. That’s a perfect weekend right there. I was gutted when they shut their doors.

Seeing all the old Steve Martin films made me think back to win "Parenthood" was filmed next door to my grandfather's house. I was living there and remember the production crew knocking to ask permission to film the exterior of his house. It was Franks house and it was filmed on Smith St. In College Park. (Orlando, Fl). Crazy how Blockbuster brought those memories back

The Machinist was a new release when I was working at Hollywood Video in Tampa. I would put that on the store TVs while working. Very underrated movie. I’m so glad you went up there buddy I knew you would love it! What a great experience. I miss video stores.

Blockbuster was one of my college jobs. I wasn’t a fan of the late nights in the area where the store was located. In fact, there was a police standoff in front of the store on one of my days off. I saw it live on the news and called my manager to warn them. That’s when I knew it was time to find something safer. 🤪

I worked at the blockbuster corporate headquarters all the way until the end. I still have a stack of 100 new membership cards and a ton of other random branded giveaways. It was a lot of fun working at the office in downtown Dallas. They would bring by different actors that would stop by every cubicle to talk with us and sign movie posters.

That's one of the reasons why I like traveling to the USA, apart from visiting family. The Americans are just brutally stuck in the 80s. In my area, one of the last extremely rare video stores closed for good with the pandemic. I am very happy to have been a child in this 80s golden era.

I rented from Blockbuster a few times. We had a music and video distributor in our town, so they opened their own rental store. It was inside an old skating rink. They built the floor on top of the skating surface, so the floor would bounce when you walked on it. Their inventory was immense, and they always had some great deals. Ah!!! Those were the days.

Adam. I was a manager for blockbuster for two years back in 2006. Didn't make a lot but it was fun. Did this gig while going to college. About the late fees. Yes our store made a lot of money off of late fees and candy and drinks

Do you remember in the malls Suncoast Motion Picture Company where they sold (not rented) VHS's? ;p That was my first mall job in 1993, I remember the new releases would be around $100 for the first week or two- for a VHS!! LOL Ah, 1990's mall nostalgia!!!

I worked at a video store here in NJ called RKO Video. I was there from 1988 to 1990. A lot of good memories from that place. Tim Conway and Dolph Lundgren came to the store to promote the VHS tapes they had coming out. We had a Princess Bride Day to celebrate the release of the movie on VHS. They actually got performers from the NY Ren Faire to come perform at the store.

I was big on the local mom and pop ones no matter where I was. They had some of the more obscure movies. Blockbuster tried to be too family friendly at one time that it limited them on some movies. I do remember when Blockbuster came around it shut out a lot of the independent ones which was sad. I still have a little nostalgia for Blockbuster though. This is very cool to see.

I did get to visit the Bend Oregon location and bought myself plenty of stickers and a pair of socks. I had a lot of fun making that video At the time they were renting, but you have to be a local resident I believe. Great Video Adam!!🤘

I work for Blockbuster corporate building facility manager for Wayne Huizinga downtown Fort Lauderdale, but a great guy. He gave me club seats to the first Marlin game then I went to work for him out at Blockbuster golf and games in West sunrise which was a video arcade park and batting cages and driving range. I worked as facility manage, Until paramount Park bought them out and then they closed up Wayne Huizinga recently passed away. He was a good guy to work for and I know Wayne Junior, these good people also.

My favorite video store chain was a regional one called Video Factory. There's even a couple commercials from the late 80s and early 90s for Video Factory here on YouTube. Great memories renting movies, cartoons, and wrestling VHS tapes as well as NES games in the 80s there! Blockbuster took over Video Factory in the mid 90s.

You remember right Adam. In 92, my friend told me I had to rent Bad Lieutenant because it was brutal. No local owned Haight St video store had it, so I got it from Blockbuster on Church St. The movie was so tame, I thought my friend had lost his mind, then I found out Blockbuster had edited out the ultra violence and raunch.

My mom used to be a gm for a Blockbuster store that was brand new, grew up watching movies and playing games with the free weekly rentals perk they gave employees. Don't remember the smocks but I do recall the blue/yellow lined polos that she had. Great walk-thru of the experience Adam! They are just missing the full walls of new releases and games section!

I worked at a smaller, local video store chain before Blockbuster bought it out, so I had some hard feelings about the company as well. For years, as a customer, I would "face" the VHS or DVD boxes over the stack of tapes/discs behind them out of habit. We had about six rewind machines behind the counter. Now I have a Plex collection of digital movies but I've had a hard time finding Cocoon. There were only certain (family-type) movies we could play on the monitors, and Roxanne was one of those...saw it a million times. The biggest movie release I recall when I worked there was "E.T." It was released years after it was in the theaters. Unfortunately, Family Video was the last rental place around me, and it closed a few years ago. Great memories and I enjoyed watching!

We loved Blockbuster. Many years ago that was what we did every Tuesday we would rent 3 new movies and 3 old videos until next week's Tuesday.
The crazy thing about what you were saying about Christian Bale is that he lost all the weight for the Machinist then did Batman like you said. Then after that he lost all the weight again for Rescue Dawn. So many great movies!

I came down from Nova Scotia to visit central Florida, I saw the World's biggest orange and the wizard store on hwy 192. It was so cool to see it in real life! I got some cool souvinirs at the orange.

I miss Blockbuster days....I remember when they went out of business, we went and bought up a bunch of VHS and DVDs. I didn't have cable as a teenager, just a wire hanger and channel U aka PBS, so being able to buy the movies cheap was nice. Still have most of the vhs and dvds we purchased. This is pretty neat, thanks for sharing! I also agree, some of the smaller movie rental stores had better options especially with the horror sci fi genre.

I never rented at Blockbuster. In LA i spent a ton of money renting at a place called Eddie Brant's Saturday Matinee located in North Hollywood. They were also a place that had 16, 000+ beta VHS and disks...ah the good old days!

I have that Blockbuster doc on Blu-ray that was filmed at the Bend location, a name tag, rental cards, and more. Blockbuster & Hollywood video were mainstays of my childhood. However, my local mom & pop shops were where it was at. We had one called Hometown Video only closed down 6 years ago. The man who ran it was always the nicest dude & as cinephiles we both had a good time talking movies & often shared many suggestions that both of us were happy with. He also sold USED but impeccably perfect condition blus & rare DVDs that I was able to build my collection up immensely. He even had Criterion & Shout Factory releases! God how I miss the place so much! I hate streaming & am still a big physical media collector today - you can’t get the same special features online except some small services. Forget finding the quality & treatment that Arrow, Shout/Scream Factory, Second Sight, criterion collection, Vinegar Syndrome, etc put into their remasters & bonus features.

Anyways, thanks for the awesome look at something I’d have loved to been there for. I won’t even get to my game rental love. Can’t find that today!

I was just able to get my kids the Blockbuster experience. They were born in the range of 2000-2002, and so I guess they were near the last generation of kids to get to pick out games and movies on Friday evenings.
