Stay With Me Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the mornin' don't say you love me,
'Cause I'll only kick you out of the door
I know your name is Rita 'cause your perfume's smellin' sweeter
Since when I saw you down on the floor.

Won't need to much pursuadin'
I don't mean to sound degradin',
But with a face like that you got nothin' to laugh about.
Red lips, hair and fingernails,
I hear you're a mean old Jezebel
Lets go up stairs and read my Tarot cards

Stay with me, stay with me
For tonight you'd better stay with me
Stay with me, stay with me
For tonight you'd better stay with me

So, in the mornin', please don't say you love me
'Cause you know I'll only kick you out the door
Yeah, I'll pay your cab fare home, you can even use my best cologne,
Just don't be here in the mornin' when I wake up

Stay with me, stay with me
For tonight you'd gonna stay with me
Sit down, get up, get out.

Stay with me, stay with me
For tonight you'd gonna stay with me

He what's your name again?
Get out.

Overall Meaning

The song "Faces" by Stay With Me has lyrics that revolve around a one-night stand with a woman named Rita. The singer is not interested in a long-term commitment and makes this clear to her. He describes her physical features, red lips, hair, and fingernails, and tells her that she has nothing to laugh about with a face like that. He is purely interested in the physical aspect of their relationship, as is evident in the line "Let's go upstairs and read my Tarot cards," which can be seen as a metaphor for a sexual encounter.

The chorus "Stay with me, stay with me, for tonight you'd better stay with me," is repeated throughout the song as the singer tries to convince Rita to stay. However, he warns her that he doesn't want to hear her say, "I love you" in the morning, and that she should be gone by the time he wakes up. The song ends with him telling her to get out.

The lyrics can be seen as a commentary on the typical one-night stand culture, where people are only interested in physical pleasure and not long-term commitments. The singer is very clear with his intentions and doesn't want Rita to misunderstand or have any expectations. The song also challenges societal norms that women are expected to act in a certain way and not indulge in casual sex.

My Grandmother, Phyllis, was a huge Rod Stewart fan. She adored him for the singing & the songs. She loved to sing too. She passed away October 2nd, 2022. She was 87 years young. Beautiful woman. She always said she loves his voice the most. She had her cassettes and I loved her singing along . Beautiful Southern voice! Love to all these guys in this band, from North Carolina USA!🙏❤🌻🌹🦋
