I especially like the factual approach to this series, without the usual ideological bias against Germany. After all the French started this war. And the mindset in those days was different from now. Nationalism was viewed by everyone as a virtue, not as a dangerous disease as it is nowadays.

A lecture that I now forgot exactly the name of about the development of the general staff concept went at length into the painful German experience of dealing with guerilla warfare during this war - leading them to become harsher and more cruel in upcoming conflicts. Yes that is correct. The Franc-Tireurs panic had spread to the lower ranks too and was being kept alive over decades.

This was a major factor in the rape of Belgium in World War one.

You should do a special episode about French partisan units and their weaponry, as well as the Pontifical Zouaves and their Remington's Rolling Block rifle. The 1870 war saved Remington from bankruptcy! The history of these units and their weapons, mostly US imported, are fascinating: colts, repeaters, carbines, the Volontaires de la Mort (Volunteers of Death), the defenders of Châteaudun... Great video material.

@Real Time History the Wehrmacht would also conduct similar reprisals on the Polish civil population during the first week of invasion in 1939. Like Belgium 1914, there was no evidence produced of civil resistance, just the perceived idea that franc-tireurs were potentially lying in wait.

@Neil Buckley Excellent observation Neil: Having said that the Spanish were awfully cruel and usually tortured the French prisoners. Look at some of Goya's famous drawings known as "Los desastres de la guerra" (War's Disasters) You will see Franch soldiers cut in half or impaled. The French in 1870 did nothing of that kind.

I enjoy this series and appreciate it's depth. The issue of retribution against frontiere is discussed well as it brings up many fascinating points well applicable to modern topics. I have many questions, but foremost is related to something pointed to by Jordan Peterson. He pointed out how in order to be effective a man needs a fearsome aspect. In the 1870's in Europe, the ruling powers were comfortable with attaching full citizenship to those of noble birth, and reluctant to offer it to the middle classes. However, societal forces mandated more inclusion. I imagine that suffrage with severe control seemed the least objectional concession. Arming the peasantry being far from desirable. France in despiration acts, knowing that this means it will complicate things in their society. From the German perspective, peasantry under arms and monitored carefully by officers and sergeants isn't a social threat so long as military justice can dispatch the incorrigible peasant with a firing squad. The classic system of warfare being stressed was content without being troubled by a roused and fearsome peasantry interfering with their columns wherever they needed to march. It is strange how the tables turned on the French as they'd dealt with the Spanish in the Peninsular Campaign.

Some notes from Germany. 1) Both in Spain, also in the lesser known tyrolian revolt under Andreas Hofer ( Austria, so Germany in those days) in 1809, the French had to face Guerilla warfare, they, the French acted rather cruel, so the French should shut their mouth. 2) In 1813 when prussian gouvernement mobilized against Napoleon, the mobilized troops had been regular troops, ( secretly trained/ Krümpersystem) reserves, uniformed Freikorps, and quickly mobilized militias ( Landwehr). It was a problem, to have uniforms for all. There was also the plan to mobilize also the Landsturm ( elderly, young, not realy fightable men etc.), to do Guerilla warfare, but when prussian king heared this plan, he didn' t allow this. Also many german educated persons, remember this was the age of Goethe and other artists, scientists and philosophers, had been against Guerilla warfare. 3) I am no academic, only interessted in military history, and i don' t know a war in Germany, where german civilians ( without belonging to Landsturm) fought against foreign soldiers. Perhaps in thirty years war, when all soldiers plundered, it could have been, that armed civilians tried to somehow defend their homeregion. ( There had been ,Stickmen' in english wars of Parlament) . d) This Guerilla warfare has/ had no Tradition in Germany, so the german soldiers became angry.

It was actually built for shooting balloons down and was known as BAK, short for Ballonabwehrkanone. An example can be seen in the military history museum in Dresden for instance.

The « surprise » of Ablis was an action of 2 companies (less than 200 men) from the francs-tireurs de Paris. It was a battalion of around 1000 men from the capital organized in nine companies. Very well equipped, and dressed armed with the chassepot. Commanded by an aristocrat of polish origin : count Lipowski and had in it’s rank a captain Napoleon La Cecilia who would become a general of the Commune, to further illustrate the diversity of an army where papal zouaves and Garibaldi would fight on the same side. They claimed the capture of 70 prisoners (some sources say 68, other 75) and about 100 horses. but their most notable feat of arms will be in a few days, the defense of Châteaudun..

Fascinating video. I definietly knew about the Franc-tireur. I did not know about the use of balloons, though it should not be a surprise given France's history with balloons. We also used them here in the US during the Civil War. Also knew about importing arms from the US. The US and Confederate governments purchased arms from all over Europe to be able to quickly equip the fast growing armies until home production could catch up so it should be no surprise the US supply arms to Europeans in need.

Lastly, can't agree with your statement about villages being burned in the U.S. Most of the cities that were burned in the south - Charleston, Atlanta, etc, usualy were not burned by the Union "invaders" they were torched by retreating Confederates - there is much more detail to this but I'm not getting into it. Places like Vicksburg and Richmond were burned simply because it was part of the Confederate defense and they were bombarded by artillery - don't want your city destroyed by artillery, don't hide your army there.

None of those cities are villages though.

the county seat of where I lived a year ago was burned during the civil war by Union troops in 1865. A gunboat was sent down the river specifically to do it, and every building that survived has a plaque in front of it now (7 all told).

meanwhile, the city where I live now was a railroad hub at the time, and was captured and occupied by union troops who wanted to control the railroad.

Both locations are in northern Alabama. Just two data points near me.

Whatever happened in the Franco-Prussian war where, as Jesse says, the legal position was obscture I suggest that the real tragedy of the guerilla warfare was that the Germans delibearately committed atrocities in Belgium in 1914 to deter irregual warfare. Many Belgians must have died due to what was probably 'blue on blue' fire between inexperienced German troops.

"German demands for French territory" which unlike pervious and later demand by the French for German territory was inhabitated mainly by ethnic Germans. I can visit the countryside in those regions still today and talk to the people there in Palatinian - a German dialect. There is a reason why the French never accepted a plebicite in those regions about whch nation those people wanted to belong to.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the Germans learned that response from the French. In Spain during the Napoleonic Wars, the French responded to guerilla attacks by burning nearby villages. That is where the word guerilla comes from -- guerra : war ; guerrilla : little war. If the people make war, then the people become targets.

There is no ambiguity here. Noncombatants enjoy protection against reprisals as long as they remain noncombatants. Anyone who strikes at a regular army from the cover of a population that supposedly is not taking part in the fighting endangers that population. Any population that grants such attackers cover and protection thereby recinds its protection under the laws of warfare: A commander does not have to suffer his men to be killed by civilians merely because they are civilians.

Limiting fighting to uniformed opponents mitigated the damage caused by war. In not complying with these norms, irregular combatants threatened a return to the abyss of the 30 Years War, where civilians were targets. Civilised/sensible states should never use irregular combatants; war is cruel enough.

Trying to portray your side as virtuous and the enemy as bad and deserving of their fate could be seen as hypocritical from an outside perspective but is just what happens in a zero sum game like war.

Its one thing when the soldiers u fight are your countrymen who have family in the crowd beside u; but its a whole different picture when its soldiers who have no ties to you or your culture, or country.

All German armies were mainly forces from the start of the war, France started out with a mainly professional army although there also was a ballot system for conscription which worked similar to a lottery. Later on after most of the French army was captured France also introduced universal conscription.

I'm with the germans on this one, this war should be over already. Fighting for petty squabbles between nobles is meaningless but atleast it was fought between professional armies and ended after a few decisive battles. Now with the enlightenment you fight for an ideological reason until the last man, demonizing the enemy. WW1 was the worst of both worlds where petty squabbles between nobles turned into the survival of whole nations and empires that bled dry an entire generation of young man all over the world.

Why are there so few photographs? The American Civil War was heavily documented by photographers, both journalist and 'camp' photographers recorded hundreds of images throughout the conflict. Was it a cultural difference? The technology for photographs had advanced to a degree I would imagine.

there are some more photographs. most of them are in the German federal archive. The German federal archive doesn't grant licenses for YouTube. And because of a key difference in European and American copyright law (sweat of the brow doctrine), we can't do anything about that.

And it's against the rules of war to have civilians attack soldiers out of uniform and then fade back into the population in occupied territories. Not saying that the Prussians were acting within the bounds of reason/the accepted norms..

@Adam Safran There are no rules of war except win or die. If your reason for killing your enemy is that they're "breaking the rules", then you have no business fighting a war.

I'm.. Not sure how I was implied of stating this? I was curiuos what the internatinoal opinion was on the matter. Ie, how did the British press report on it? Was public opinion in Europe neutral, in support of French actions, German ones? I'm just trying to get an idea of what the broad international thoughts/presentations were on it. Nothing wahtsoever related to if it was justified.

Why do we still insist on calling it the "The Franco-Prussian War?" It was France against the North German Confederation. Isn't Franco-German War more accurate? Of course Britain and France spent forever vilifying Prussia and we Americans just parroted them like we did not have a brain of our own, but it's kind of like referring to the Korean war as the Korean-American War...because we just want to emphasize the United States. Subtle dishonesty.

Franco-German is more accurate, since not only the North German Confederation but also the southern German states fought. It is actually called that in French and German. But basically no one calls it that in English and so...

@JohnHughesChampigny It is often called the War of 1870 in French, but more recently, especially in book titles and articles etc, it is referred to also as la guerre franco-allemande (de 1870).
