The song De Hofnar by Stef Bos tells the story of a jester, or court fool, in the king's court. The jester, or the “hofnar” in Dutch, is someone who is allowed to say anything and everything as long as it pleases the king. The jester is a performer who entertains the people, makes them laugh, and sings to stay alive. He says what he sees and gives no credit because he knows that the kings' ministers can drink his blood if he dares to say something adverse. The song portrays the life of the jester as difficult, as he has to hide his true feelings of aversion and hatred towards the king and his regime. He has to perform as per the King's demand and never let his true feelings be known, or his life will be at risk.
The jester knows that his life can be taken away quickly, and anytime the king is not amused by his performance. He lives a dangerous life, performs on the king's demand, but deep down is despondent and holds a great deal of hatred towards the king. The song is a metaphor for the oppressed and suppressed masses living under the tyrannical regime. The song also talks about how the jester, like all the other court fools, is expendable, and other jesters are ready to take his place or kill him if the king is not entertained.

Staan klaar als hyena's
Om mij te verscheuren
But the other jesters, waiting in the wings, are ready to tear me apart like hyenas
En dan valt het doek
En er zal geen applaus zijn
De koning gaat weg
En slaat met de deuren
And then the curtain falls, there will be no applause, the king leaves and slams the doors
