Want
Wat is bekend zijn
Het is geen kunst
Er zijn er met talent
De meesten doen het zonder
Jij ziet alleen het circus
Ik zie de leeuwenkuil
Nu lijken ze nog aardig
Maar straks
Krijgen ze honger
The song "De Leeuwenkuil" by Stef Bos is a commentary on the nature of fame and how it can be both alluring and dangerous. The lyrics describe someone who is famous and constantly in the public eye, yet seemingly disconnected from those around them. The singer sees this person in various settings, such as on the cover of a magazine or on a TV panel, where they are the center of attention but unaware of their surroundings. The metaphor of the lion's den, or "leeuwenkuil" in Dutch, is used to represent the price of fame, where people may appear friendly now, but will turn on the famous person when they become hungry for more attention.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Wat is bekend zijn, het is geen kunst" which means "What is fame, it's not an art." The singer is suggesting that fame is not a natural talent, but rather a byproduct of certain activities, such as being in the entertainment industry or exploiting one's personal life to gain attention. Despite the allure of fame, the singer sees it for what it is - a tradeoff between public adoration and personal autonomy. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the singer wishing happiness for the famous person he addresses and hoping they find fulfillment in their pursuits.
