Met straten zonder namen
Nachten zonder licht
En huizen zonder ramen
Maar de deuren staan open
En het eten staat klaar
En alles wat ik ken krijgt hier
De vrouwen lopen langzaam
Om langer mooi te zijn
Op het ritme van de hitte
Aan de rand van de woestijn
Ik eet met mijn handen
Ik zit op de grond
Ik praat met mijn ogen
Ik drink van haar mond
Want ze lacht naar mij
Ze danst voor mij
Ze kijkt naar mij
Ze zingt voor mij
De nacht is helder
De maan die lacht
Ik zie de sterren aan de hemel
Door de gaten in het dak
En de vrouwen zingen zacht
Want ze zingen wat ze zijn
Op het ritme van de hitte
Aan de rand van de woestijn
En als het regent... Danst het water
In de doodgewaande bedding
Van een machtige rivier
En als het regent
Dansen alle vrouwen
Want een hemel zonder wolken
Is een vijand hier
The lyrics of Stef Bos's Serekunda paint a vivid picture of life in the city of Serekunda, which is located in the West African nation of The Gambia. The song describes Serekunda as a place of anonymity and darkness, where there are no street names, no lights, and houses without windows. Despite this, the people of Serekunda are warm and welcoming, as evidenced by the open doors and prepared food.
The song goes on to describe the daily rhythms of life in Serekunda. The women move slowly to preserve their beauty in the oppressive heat, while the singer eats and drinks with his hands, sitting on the ground. The language barrier is overcome through eye contact and dance. Even though the city is lacking in material comforts, there is a sense of joy and contentment in the people's celebrations of life under the stars.
Overall, the song seems to be a celebration of the resilience and strength of the people of Serekunda in the face of difficult circumstances. Despite the challenges they face, they are able to find joy and beauty in the world around them.
