From the perspective of the peasantry, pop history has it off with ‘the dark ages’.

We call it such because the cultural and intellectual development of Europe in this period was greatly hindered by its deprivation of that greatest of institutions, the Silk Road.

The peasants meanwhile lived free from the true darkness of eras, war.

European warfare post fall of Rome can broadly be divided into three eras, based on which of the three estates formed the core of a field army.

FEUDAL:

the classic mounted noble core and large peasant infantry formation. These were much more devastating for nobles than commoners, the latter of whom would often rout easily before suffering any serious casualties

ELITE:

the equally iconic pike and shot era of warfare, elite mercenaries did most of the work and thus total warfare in the period increased as the ones who funded the wars needn’t fear death while their wealth waxed. Mercantilism was the trend which allowed for such expensive war to be waged

Civil: for various reasons (flood of Spanish gold), Europe gained the wealth and security to finally draw soldiery from the largest (and most dangerous) of estates; the third.

The French wars of religion were not deadly because of fervour or bigotry, but because the hordes of uneducated, mistreated, commoners were given rifles and free reign to take as much land and plunder for their greedy masters.

This last period, in my opinion, were the true dark ages for us the people. Our brothers overseas were exploited for gold that our masters hoarded, gold we needed to live in this post-agrarian society.

Hope you all enjoy this one! Def took longer than expected, but it was a fun episode to make. Let me know if you guys prefer the shorter video segments/chapters (meant to be maximally informative). And as always, all other feedback is welcome.

Corrections:
-The term papal "curia" is used, which is slightly anachronistic. The curia would not actually be introduced until later the late 11th century

@ubertuber3d

One of the smoothest transitions into an advertisement I have seen from a history youtuber thus far.

@karpi470

I was just about to comment this.

@twhssts

how long does it last?

@JuanGarcia-mk3zk

Noted, especially after you highlighted that detail.

Smoothe indeed!

Dear Empire-Builders,
You have very quickly become one of those channels that, when they post new content, I actually plan a chill-time that evening watching your video.
For anyone else reading, another such other channel to me is North02 . Go see his stuff!
Cheers.

I'm treating this series as movies. The ones you sit back in bed, have a cup of something warm and dive into for hours. As always, amazing work! (and the best around the dark ages in my op.)

@Avinkwep

Commenting before watching the video because I assume it’ll be a banger

@theamazingfuzzlord

These videos are not just fantastically narrated, the art gorgeously curated and displayed, but the sound effects and music choices are so on pointttt
