The group began in 1994, when vocalist Sonja Drakulich followed her vision and created a vehicle for the development of devotional music based in Near Eastern and medieval modal traditions. Extraordinary musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds have since come together within the vessel of Stellamara, creating music with a common intention: to celebrate love, beauty and unity through transcendent harmony, perfect dissonance and passionate rhythms.
Rooted in Turkish, Arabic, Balkan, European medieval and Persian musical traditions, Stellamara carries a deep devotion to the music of these cultures with a unique timeless expression.
At Stellamara’s core are Sonja Drakulich and multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus. Together with co-writer and cellist Rufus Cappodocia, they weave together a bridge of unity as they collaborate with an array of inspired musicians. Their music unveils the deep relationship between seemingly disparate cultures while surpassing any confines of tradition.
Through the use of makam - traditional Middle Eastern modal scales and melodic structure - Stellamara’s strong connection to cultural origin is clear, yet they gracefully blend musical forms with both a passionate, highly personal aesthetic and subtle, otherworldly ambiance.
With three critically acclaimed albums, several compilations and independent film scores, Stellamara is now at the forefront in creating highly innovative performances and recordings. They are internationally regarded as a new model in contemporary world music and have developed as an everexpanding vehicle, revealing sublime new levels of mystery, beauty and depth.
Stellamara is currently performing as an electro-acoustic trio, featuring vocalist and producer Sonja Drakulich, multi instrumentalist and producer Miles Jay and multi instrumentalist Evan Fraser. Stellamara also continues to perform as a full acoustic based ensemble, featuring multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus, and including guest musicians: percussionists Evan Fraser, Sean Tergis, and Faisal Zedan, violinist Briana Di Mara, and accordionist Dan Cantrell and cellist Rufus Cappadocia.

Stellamara Lyrics

Por tu vientre surcar
He perdido las velas
Mi destino es errar
En el fondo del bar
Con la tinta de un pulpo escribí mi pesar
Lo enviaré con las olas
Buscaré tu piedad en el fondo del bar
En el fondo del bar
Mujer, ciudad amurallada...
Quisiera romper tus defensas...
Buscar el tesoro perla, entre tus piernas...
Reina de todos los moluscos
En el fondo
En el fondo
En el fondo
He perdido una mano,
The song "Maris" by Stellamara tells the story of a sailor who became lost at sea because of his love for a woman. The sailor speaks of how he became a sailor to follow her, but in doing so, he lost himself. He has lost his sails, and therefore his direction, and he believes his only fate is to wander aimlessly along the whims of the sea. He writes his sorrows with the ink of an octopus, and sends them along the waves, hoping to find her mercy. He is anchored in the bar, where he writes his letter, and where the animals of the sea congregate to drink and search for the star of the sea. He confesses his undying love for the woman, who he calls the queen of all mollusks, and begs to be forgiven despite his lack of direction and the physical sacrifices he has made.
