Block debuted on Broadway in 2003, playing the role of Liza Minnelli opposite Hugh Jackman's Peter Allen in the acclaimed musical The Boy from Oz. Immediately prior to this, she served as the understudy for Idina Menzel as Elphaba and was part of the ensemble in Wicked while the show was in its pre-Broadway tryout at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. Block had also worked with Stephen Schwartz on Wicked , as Elphaba, while the musical was still in early development - before Menzel became involved. In the spring of 2005, Block originated the role in the First National Tour of Wicked and performed with the company for a year. She was awarded the 2006 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production and the 2007 Carbonell Award for Best Non-Resident Actress for this role. Block recently reprised her role as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked. Block began her run on October 9, 2007 and replaced former US national tour Elphaba, Julia Murney. She left the company on June 15th, 2008 and was replaced by West End star, Kerry Ellis.
Her many regional stage credits include Funny Girl, Crazy for You, Oliver!, James Joyce's The Dead, The Grass Harp, Bells Are Ringing (Reprise!) and I Love a Piano. Block was the original Belle in the Disneyland production of Beauty and the Beast and has done voice work for numerous commercial jingles, including the singing voice of Barbie.
Block was most recently seen in the new Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil musical The Pirate Queen, in which she starred in the title role of Grania (also known as Grace O'Malley). She performed in The Pirate Queen in its tryout run in Chicago, Illinois as well as on Broadway.
Ms. Block appeared in a benefit performance celebrating Andrew Lippa, and the 25th Anniversary of the internationally renowned performing troupe 'The Kids Next Door' at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, CA in Dec. 2006 (appearing alongside other 'KND' alumni Matthew Morrison, Terron Brooks, Kamilah Martin, Jessica Burrows and others). The performance benefited The California Conservatory of the Arts, a non-profit arts education organization providing pre-professional training for young performers, selected by audition, in southern California.
Musical fact: Stephanie J. Block is a mezzo-soprano who attests to having a three-octave range with a low note of E3 (the lowest note in "I'm Not That Girl," a song from the musical Wicked).
She married Wicked tour costar Sebastian Arcelus on October 25, 2007. Arcelus recently starred alongside Block in the Broadway company of Wicked from October to December 2007 (Block played the titular role of Elphaba and Arcelus played Fiyero).
Block sang the "National Anthem" at the June 25, 2007 New York Mets game at Shea Stadium in Flushing, NY.
She reprised her role in Wicked on Broadway opposite Annaleigh Ashford as Glinda for an eight-month run that began on October 9, 2007 and ended June 15, 2008.
Fly Away

Who followed Peter with a hook replaced as his hand
In those tales, bad guys seldom did win
So the Captain was eaten and Wendy had twins
That's the story as I recall
Though I may have made up the end
I don't remember much at three feet tall
Except for when I'd say,
Let me fly for one day
Throw that fairy dust in my hair
As I pretend I'm flying away"
I'm flying away
Well to my surprise, I grew up too fast,
And that easy life of Tinkerbell never did last
So I silently dream myself far, far away
Where I would be immortalized like Peter one day
And that's my childhood as I recall
Though in some ways it never did end
And now I'm standing, well, a little bit taller
Except for when I say,

"Mom, let me go to Never Neverland
Let me fly for one day
Throw that fairy dust in my hair
As I pretend I'm flying away"
I'm flying away
And though life is never easy as we as children read in the books
Where fairy dust could just fly you so far away
And all I ask is that you leave me my imagination
So I can pretend I'm flying away
I'm flying away
And that is where I'll stay
Right here in Never Neverland
I'd be flying, I'd be dying
For love and appreciation
Where mermaids would sing
And fairies would ring
Right down here in Never Neverland
And it's second to the left and straight on 'til morning
Or was it second to the right and straight on 'til morning?
In Never Neverland
In my Never Neverland
The lyrics of Stephanie J. Block's song Fly Away is about the singer's childhood memories of listening to her mother's stories about the fictional land of Never Neverland. She remembers being captivated by the tale of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and Wendy, and wishing she could be a part of that world. The singer says that as she has grown older, life has become harder, and the freedom and adventure of childhood seem like a distant memory. She still longs to fly away to Never Neverland, where she can run free and escape the harsh realities of the real world.
The song is a tribute to the power of imagination and nostalgia for lost childhood. It evokes a sense of yearning for simpler times, and a desire to escape the trials and tribulations of adulthood. The lyrics suggest that while growing up is inevitable, it's important to hold on to the playful, imaginative spirit of childhood.

She'd tell me 'bout Captain Hook and all of his men
My mother would relay stories of Captain Hook and his crew
Who followed Peter with a hook replaced as his hand
They chased Peter Pan, who had lost his hand to the pirate's hook
In those tales, bad guys seldom did win
In those stories, the villains usually failed to defeat the heroes
So the Captain was eaten and Wendy had twins
Captain Hook met his demise, and Wendy had children
That's the story as I recall
This is the tale that I remember
Though I may have made up the end
Although the ending may be my creation
I don't remember much at three feet tall
At such a young age, I recollect very little
Except for when I'd say,
Except for the moments when I would plead
"Mom, let me go to Never Neverland
"Mother, allow me to journey to Never Neverland
Let me fly for one day
Permit me to fly for a single day
Throw that fairy dust in my hair
Sprinkle fairy dust on me
As I pretend I'm flying away"
So that I can imagine that I am soaring off
I'm flying away
I'm escaping through my imagination
Well to my surprise, I grew up too fast,
To my astonishment, I matured rapidly
And that easy life of Tinkerbell never did last
The effortless existence of Tinkerbell came to an end
So I silently dream myself far, far away
Thus, I dream silently of departing to a distant land
Where I would be immortalized like Peter one day
A place where I would be remembered forever like Peter Pan
And that's my childhood as I recall
That's how I remember my youth
Though in some ways it never did end
Even though, in many respects, it never came to an end
And now I'm standing, well, a little bit taller
And now I'm grown, albeit a bit taller than before
"Mom, let me go to Never Neverland
"Mother, allow me to journey to Never Neverland
Let me fly for one day
Permit me to fly for a single day
Throw that fairy dust in my hair
Sprinkle fairy dust on me
As I pretend I'm flying away"
So that I can imagine that I'm soaring off
I'm flying away
I'm escaping through my imagination
And though life is never easy as we as children read in the books
Even though life is not as simple as portrayed in children's books
Where fairy dust could just fly you so far away
Where a sprinkle of fairy dust was all you needed to journey far away
And all I ask is that you leave me my imagination
All I entreat is that you let me keep my imagination
So I can pretend I'm flying away
So that I can imagine that I'm soaring off
I'm flying away
I'm escaping through my imagination
And that is where I'll stay
And that's where I'll remain
Right here in Never Neverland
Right here in Never Neverland
I'd be flying, I'd be dying
I'd be flying, I'd be dying
For love and appreciation
For love and esteem
Where mermaids would sing
Where mermaids would croon
And fairies would ring
And fairies would sound out
Right down here in Never Neverland
Right down here in Never Neverland
And it's second to the left and straight on 'til morning
And it's second to the left and straight on 'til morning
Or was it second to the right and straight on 'til morning?
Or was it second to the right and straight on 'til morning?
