Block debuted on Broadway in 2003, playing the role of Liza Minnelli opposite Hugh Jackman's Peter Allen in the acclaimed musical The Boy from Oz. Immediately prior to this, she served as the understudy for Idina Menzel as Elphaba and was part of the ensemble in Wicked while the show was in its pre-Broadway tryout at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. Block had also worked with Stephen Schwartz on Wicked , as Elphaba, while the musical was still in early development - before Menzel became involved. In the spring of 2005, Block originated the role in the First National Tour of Wicked and performed with the company for a year. She was awarded the 2006 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production and the 2007 Carbonell Award for Best Non-Resident Actress for this role. Block recently reprised her role as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked. Block began her run on October 9, 2007 and replaced former US national tour Elphaba, Julia Murney. She left the company on June 15th, 2008 and was replaced by West End star, Kerry Ellis.
Her many regional stage credits include Funny Girl, Crazy for You, Oliver!, James Joyce's The Dead, The Grass Harp, Bells Are Ringing (Reprise!) and I Love a Piano. Block was the original Belle in the Disneyland production of Beauty and the Beast and has done voice work for numerous commercial jingles, including the singing voice of Barbie.
Block was most recently seen in the new Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil musical The Pirate Queen, in which she starred in the title role of Grania (also known as Grace O'Malley). She performed in The Pirate Queen in its tryout run in Chicago, Illinois as well as on Broadway.
Ms. Block appeared in a benefit performance celebrating Andrew Lippa, and the 25th Anniversary of the internationally renowned performing troupe 'The Kids Next Door' at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, CA in Dec. 2006 (appearing alongside other 'KND' alumni Matthew Morrison, Terron Brooks, Kamilah Martin, Jessica Burrows and others). The performance benefited The California Conservatory of the Arts, a non-profit arts education organization providing pre-professional training for young performers, selected by audition, in southern California.
Musical fact: Stephanie J. Block is a mezzo-soprano who attests to having a three-octave range with a low note of E3 (the lowest note in "I'm Not That Girl," a song from the musical Wicked).
She married Wicked tour costar Sebastian Arcelus on October 25, 2007. Arcelus recently starred alongside Block in the Broadway company of Wicked from October to December 2007 (Block played the titular role of Elphaba and Arcelus played Fiyero).
Block sang the "National Anthem" at the June 25, 2007 New York Mets game at Shea Stadium in Flushing, NY.
She reprised her role in Wicked on Broadway opposite Annaleigh Ashford as Glinda for an eight-month run that began on October 9, 2007 and ended June 15, 2008.

Whatever you need
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally
'Cause I'm every woman (Every woman)
It's all in me
It's all in me
Yeah
I'm every woman
It's all in me
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally
I'm every woman
It's all in me
I can read your thoughts right now
Every woman, whoever made ya say...
Whoa whoa whoa
Whoa (oh) whoa (oh) whoa
I can cast a spell
See, but you can't tell
Mix a special groove
Put fire inside of you
Anytime you feel danger or fear
Then instantly
I will appear
Yeah oh
I'm every woman
It's all in me
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally
Whoa whoa whoa
Whoa whoa whoa
I can set your knees
like playing unto the seas
I can make a rhyme of confusion in your mind
And when it comes down to some little flash of love
I got it, I got it
I got it, got it, baby baby
I'm every woman
It's all in me
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally
I'm every woman
It's all in me
I can read your thoughts right now
Every woman, whoever made ya say...
Whoa whoa whoa
Whoa whoa whoa
I ain't braggin'
'Cause I'm the one
Just ask me
Oh, it shall be done
And don't bother
to compare
I've got it
Whoa whoa whoa
Whoa whoa whoa
Whoa whoa whoa
Ahhhhh
I'm every woman
I'm every woman
I'm every woman
I'm every woman
I'm every woman
I'm every woman
I'm every woman
I'm every woman
I'm every woman (Chaka)
I'm every woman (Chaka)
I'm every woman (Ha ha ha)
I'm every woman (Come on girl)
The lyrics to Stephanie J. Block's song "Woman" tell a story of a man who has a kindhearted woman who loves him and would do anything for him, but is also being pursued by other women who are not as kind-hearted. He loves this woman but she does not love him back. He is worried about how she treats him and is heartbroken when he hears her call out another man's name. The woman he loves is described as kind-hearted but also evil, as she studies evil all the time and can be deadly to him.
The lyrics reflect on the complexity and the struggles of a romantic relationship. The singer here is torn between his feelings of love for the woman who does not reciprocate, and the fear and anxiety caused by the other women who are chasing him. The lyrics reveal the pain that this man feels, as he is stuck between his love and his fear of these other women who want him for their own. This can be interpreted as a warning about the dangers of being too trusting and getting involved with the wrong people.

Woman I am born
What does "woman" mean?
Must my dreams face scorn
Held back and unseen
If I long for fire
Must it stay unreal?
Can I not desire?
Am I not to feel?
If I ache to taste
Am I not to try?
If my heary says sail
Why must I deny?
I have my dreams
I have made plans
I see horizons wide as a man's
Must I be nothing till I'm some man's wife?
Look at this face
Does it deceive?
Do I look made to milk and to weave?
I will be damned to Hell if that is my life!
(Interlude)
Tiernan,
I'm almost your age,
I'm your match in size,
I'm your match with swords
An equal in most eyes
But when you have a dream
And you're caught in it's grip
You can climb aboard a ship
You can -
You can for you're a man
You can reach toward that place
Where the earth meets the sky
Fight a battle be brave, be true
If you can do it, why not I?
I'm meant to fly
Sail unrestrained
Why is man free and woman chained?
Is that my epitaph before I die?
I should be free
Free to be Grace
I want to feel the wind on my face!
And when life beckons, I should go
Face out the storm, not stay below
Am I to be just woman? No! Not I! Last Updat
