Mr. Man

Swaying to the rhythm set up by the breeze
I'd like to play you new songs that I wrote on my knees
And if you'd like to live here then we can cut some keys
The clothes you wore, you had to change
For you were getting bored
In studied rags, do slip straps show
Mister twentieth century man
You don't have to pretend that everything won't end
Mister twentieth century man
Say goodbye to your shoes, turn off the news
Mister twentieth century man, it's over
Who'll miss the twentieth century man'
Haven't I been lucky' I've been allowed to sing
Fooled them when they bought me I didn't sell a thing
I want to make you happy I want this song to bring
All the love in this world the last tulips of spring
A way to live, a way to go
These things I can not find
But when I think I'm all played out
A song will come to mind
Mister twentieth century man
You don't have to pretend that everything won't end
Mister twentieth century man
Say goodbye to your shoes, turn off the news
Mister twentieth century man, it's over
Who'll miss the twentieth century man'
Mister twentieth century man
Mister twentieth century man
The opening lines of Stephen Duffy's song Mr. 20th Century Man paint an idyllic picture of a garden, where the breeze creates a musical rhythm by rustling the leaves in the trees. The next line implies that the singer would like to share new songs that he's written, symbolically through writing on his knees, with someone. If they'd like to stay in his metaphorical garden, then keys can be cut. The image of keys implies that they can unlock new doors of possibility, setting us squarely in the 20th century.
The lines "The clothes you wore, you had to change/For you were getting bored/In studied rags, do slip straps show/Now you can't be ignored" contrast with the opening lines about the peaceful garden. The clothes the person is wearing are uncomfortable, and they feel that they were not being fully seen before this moment. They can now be seen and heard. The chorus repeats throughout the song, saying "Mister twentieth century man/You don't have to pretend that everything won't end/Say goodbye to your shoes, turn off the news/Mister twentieth century man, it's over/Who'll miss the twentieth century man'". The song seems to be a commentary on the impending end of the 20th century and encourages the listener to let go of material things and the noise of the news so they can appreciate the beauty of the present moment.

Lyrics :)
I’m sorry Mr. man
But I don’t know why
The world was in his hands
When he bout lost his mind
He’s wandering away, trying find his way back home
The closer that he gets, the harder it is to go
Never told a lie
Heart that will survive
How’d he end up like this?
Cuz I once heard him say
If I can’t do this on my own, then papa I’ll be coming home
But I’m going all the way
So if your love can let me go, then I’ll find heaven down this road
I’m sorry Mr. man
But I don’t know why
The world was in his hands
When he bout lost his mind
But don’t you worry now
Don’t you dare say goodbye
It takes some breaking down, to see what’s inside
To see what’s inside
Running from the love (not quite sure what he says next)
Turn yourself around because nothing’s worse than giving up
Cuz I once heard him say
If I can’t do this on my own, then papa I’ll be coming home
But I’m going all the way
So if your love can let me go, then I’ll find heaven down this road
