Bishop's song "Separate Lives," from the movie White Nights, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1985, losing out to "Say You, Say Me" from the same film. Bishop wrote it about his breakup with actress Karen Allen, who also appeared in Animal House.
Patrick Bateman, the fictional anti-hero from Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho, is an avowed fan of Stephen Bishop.

You're no exception to the rule
And don't make me feel like a fool
'Cause I'll try a little harder
You'll see it my way someday
Open up
Let me in
Let it begin
Everybody needs love
From the old man sleeping in the corner
Everybody needs love
To the baby smiling in a hurricane
Everybody needs love
Why wait around for the sun to shine
Everybody needs love
Don't you worry, love will find you in time
There's been a whole lot of women in my life
But you got 'em beat by a mile
So hold on to your heart
You can't stop it once you start
'Cause you know yes you do
You need me
You need me
I need you
(repeat chorus)

One of the great singers of late 70s soft rock--great song as well.

Never understood why this song wasn't a bigger hit.
This one didn't get the air play it deserved, but an excellent produced, arranged track.
There was such great music coming out in the 70s from all genres, pop, rock, R&B, disco and country. All artists seem to be on top of their games and they produced the best work of their careers.

Crazy. 40 years ago I loved this song. It should have been huge.

Agree, so should have save it for a rainy day. I think Disco was so huge a the time, that a lot of great pop music that wasn't quite in the dance or disco genre got lost.

rob morrison I have a greatest hits but I like the deep tracks from the albums. The ‘80 release should have released a few hits (Send a Little Love My Way).

Back in high school in 1986 during our foundation day school party we had a program where the teachers , principals and the rest of the faculty members including the entire school staff, employees, and even the school janitors / janitreses all danced to this song in a surprise presentation. The program being held in a large basketball court, Pretty soon several students around 30 - 40 percent of the entire high school roster all came forward to join in the dance with the school staff. Everyone dancing, moving, and raising their arms altogether. VERY TOUCHING SCENARIO ! Brought tears to my eyes.

Disco was in back then. This had kind of a disco beat, but it wasn't really well produced. Sounds kind of washed out with session musicians used. Great song though.
